I went ahead and did some descriptions for them, since I've seen them. But just because they aren't on anyone's list doesn't mean you can't make your own list and put your own descriptions. The more you like a show the better your description tends to be.
Elfen Lied - If you like blood and splash, this is a great anime for you. This anime is personally my favorite. Hellsing - Vampyres and blood, evilness. Naruto - Strongly recommanded anime, its great. School Rumble - Liking comic? This is the best! Chobits - Great story and kinda funny.
Thanks for the information guys, especially Cold Nite and his wonderful descriptions
I borrowed some Hellsing off of my girlfriends dad, well I took them as he's on holiday for the week he won't notice they are gone. Watched the first episode, pretty damn cool, it's put life back in to anime for me since DBZ killed it for me a few years back.
I'll be looking in to Naruto and Ghost in the Shell for definate. If I get time after my exams I will start to look at things like Cowboy Bepop and Spirited Away as they also sound pretty cool.

yes, Listen to Cold-Night the man has very good taste in Anime.
what I personaly say are GREAT starters for some one new to anime:
Anything Miyazaki. These are realy the best way to get into anime.
Also, if you watch them starting with the earlier ones and gofowards you see a very cooland quick history on how Anime has changed (techniques and such).
My current Favorite was also said: Last Exile.
Very easy to understamd, Very likable characters, cool universe, and a good mix of action/drama/comedy/etc
Get your hands on a copy of Interstella 5555. It is a good example of sorta 'artsy' anime (no lyrics, just alot of music by Daft Punk).
As a note on Hellsing: The action rocks, the characters are rather cool (badarsed is a better descrip). However, I will give you the flat out warning that the plot is lackluster (especialy at the end). I still enjoyed it, I just waned more
Oh, and we basicaly all hate DBZ. There are a few random people who realy like it and we just can't figgure out why (one of my best friends is 22 years old and loves DBZ, aside from that fact he is perfectly normal )

On a side note I grew out of DBZ years ago which has gave me my main 'anime sucks' opinion until now.
Important: anime is a medium, not a genre, so if you see one series that wasn't your thing it isn't an indication of what the others are like. If your only exposure to anime was, say, Galaxy Angel, it'd be veery different to if you saw Ghost in the Shell. I'm saying this in the same sense as... a newbie's first time playing NS who gets a terrible commander and unfriendly teammates; it's not an indication of how all of it is.

God I wish Gantz the anime was damn near close to as good as the Manga was. I was SO friggin dissapointed when I saw the changes.
Oh nice, someone recommended KGNE. It's a drama though, so it feels kinda like a chick flick.
Anyway if anyone needs recommendations, just ask.

Yeh I didn't know what KGNE was about. I initially thought is was your standart guy meets girls combined with lots of comedy. But then the plot changed, but I kept on watching it, because it does have a nice story.
It was certainly unexpected anyway. I wasn't sure if I would like it from the first 2 or 3 episodes... but then... heh.

Cyberformula GPX.... Kinda hard to find. F-Zero + Speed Racer + Incredible Story + Created by the teams behind Gundam, Macross, and later Cowboy Bebop. One of the most popular series in Japan.
Doraemon... Don't know how you can get a hold of it in US. Yes, it's a kid show. But the anime and manga should not be dissed.
Musashi No Ken... Very old series, I saw it when I was in primary school.

Well personally I think anime can be an acquired taste so if you listen to some of these hardcore anime buffs they'll recommend something that might be a bit out there. So I'll recommend some anime that even non anime buffs would enjoy. Ninja Scroll. It's a simple plot, with lots of action, interesting characters and great animation. I remember there being some language and mild sexual content so be warned.

Wait, you have only seen Evangelion series and Tank Police, and you're so certain that Tank Police > all?
EDIT: I'm assuming you mean ">" rather than "<"
And for the "Wheel of justice" scene, with the crook tied to a wheel with a grenade in his mouth, having knives thrown at him...
And the Sargeant reading "How to Kill" in the very first scene of the series!
Sheer humour of Tank Police > All
My personal favorite would have to be Trigun (esp. later in the series, the show is just pure awesomeness)
