Not to defend something that isn't mine, but having used Mac OSs, Linux, Irix, and everything between TI-99 computers, for productivity and just general ease of use, you can't really beat Windows... There's some inital getting rid of the stuff to help the one armed blind deaf mute down-syndrome'd apes out there, but I mean, what's the alternatives?
Linux? It takes so freaking much work to get the damned OS secure to a point you can sleep comfortably at night knowing your server isn't being fondled by 15 year old script kiddies thinkin' they got somethin' to prove..
Mac? Well.. unless you're using Final Cut Pro, you're more than likely playing Breakout.. or Super Breakout..
Irix? Oh, well.. now Irix is sexy, but who has 200 grand to pump into a Visualization Station? (I've had the good fortune to be able to play on a SGI workstation attached to one of NASA's flight simulation creation teams' SGI Mainframe.. even got to switch bricks out on it.. woo! </geek> )
As for all the viruses and trojans and spyware and adware and blah blah blah that make MS products so god awful and who-in-their-right-mind-would-use-it, being the supernerd I am, I'd honestly say it's solely because it's the #1 crap. Firefox was like #11 in the list of sexy browsers, and it was 'secure! switch to FF solely for the security!!! IE blows and so do you if you use it!' and now that it's #2, gaining footholds by leaps and bounds, there's an update every week and a half to patch some god awful security hole that allows gifs and other crap to take over control of your computer, because someone thought "ah, whats it gonna matter, it's a gif, noones gonna exploit it!"
Case in point, I just had to download a patch for FF, 3 "critical" security issues fixed:
MFSA 2005-44 Privilege escalation via non-DOM property overrides
MFSA 2005-43 "Wrapped" javascript: urls bypass security checks
MFSA 2005-42 Code execution via javascript: IconURL
Using javascript, a guy can execute code on a computer. Seriously, if I were an even bigger !@#$%^&*(, and lived in Brazil, I coulda exploited that and thrown it up on some site with some Bonzai Buddy crap, 928131238 and got people to surf there, and then I coulda stole all their CC information passed to sites and crap.
Who's gonna go delve into exploits for freakin.. like.. BeOS... noone uses it, so whats the point if you can jack with .00001% of the world's populace, you'll never gain fame, or that prison cell with bubba the back-door bouncer if you don't aim for the big game...
In the end of it, sure you lose some low-level control for the 'user friendliness' but any coder worth his salt can put it right back at his hands

Prove it. There are probably Firefox exploits that the public doesn't know about yet/that the Firefox team knows about but doesn't bother fixing.
Naw, let's debate this here, again.

Other than Firefox or Linux being overrated, no. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hmm...it doesn't look like Firefox is less secure than IE, after all. Along with extensions and more features, I don't see why you'd use IE.

Well Firefox is certainly suffering for its current popularity, but the fixes are being deployed.
If there are some bugs yet to be fixed I don't know, I guess not otherwise the info would spread.
IE currently has a couple of bugs to be fixed and widely known.
Concerning the OSes let me give you my point of view:
* IIS (Windows) has been widely exploited in the past; Apache didn't;
* Everything not Windows or Mac probably hasn't a GUI config tool; an expert is probably at ease with any interface being it CLI or GUI;
* I use Windows. Why? 'Cause the license came with my laptop and I'm too lazy to finish configuring Gentoo;
* I don't think Linux is for someone who wants easiness and point and click; those deserve a Mac or Windows;
* I don't know the other OS;
Ah and... I use Opera <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> .
And haven't for a year and change now. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I don't think on my own.
No, it's zealotry to blindly insist that Firefox is infallible and to call anyone who doesn't use Firefox an idiot.
The fact is, I can be just as secure using IE as I can using Firefox. It's mostly down to common sense and having the right tools.
Right now, I'm using Firefox solely for the tabbed browsing feature, and a few of the extensions.
Firefox is much less attacked than IE mostly because it's the least used program. Why write a program to attack a minority of the population, who's probably more computer literate, when you can write one to attack the leading product, that comes out of Windows out of the box?
The real reason to get Firefox is because it's usually more enjoyable to use, by personal opinion only. Tabs, addons, gestures, extensions... I just prefer Firefox. Opera's even nicer, in fact.
The best way to protect yourself is to be vigilant. Don't do anything stupid, get the obligatory protection (firewall, antispyware, AV...) and you should be fine. It's like an airbag. They help you, but they don't stop the crash.
<a href='http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActiveX#ActiveX_and_Internet_Security' target='_blank'>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActiveX#Activ...ternet_Security</a>
And I bet there are hundreds more like me too.
Hmm, that's odd, I use Linux and Firefox, and every time an update is needed, a nice red icon pops up telling me to update, then I click it, and update, it's rather painless.
Tabbed browsing, and all the nifty extentions make firefox more useable, more feature ritch, and more enjoyable to use. I don't get popups much, and I can block ad servers entirley so the browser won't even display anything from them.
I can make Live Bookmarks to read RSS feads from news sites like /., CNN, BBC and Mozilla that update every 60 minutes with news, yay!
I don't have to install a 3rd party toolbar to block popups, or to search from google without going to google.com. I can add different search engines (literally, hundreds) of them to the search too.

Yea, and how frequently does IE patch? How many more problems does IE have than FF? Last I checked, IE still lets websites install software on a users computer without their knowlege. I switched my entire family, and most of my friends to FF, and they havn't had problems with viri or spyware since.
And sure, Linux requres you not to be a braindead watermellon to use it, but it's not as dificult as some would have you beleave. With a little practice, it's really easy to use, and a whole hell of a lot easier to customize.
With Linux, I've gotten to the point where I can do a gentoo install in an hour, without the documentation, and once installed, I can keep it up to date rather easilly. Distrobutions like Fedora, Mandrake, Ubuntu or even LinSpire are user friendly enough, nice and easy graphical install, usefull software is included.
I prefer the XFCE4 desktop to Explorer any day, mostly for useablity, and it looks better. There's also Gnome and KDE, which are very user friendly desktops.
Depending on what your doing, Linux is every bit as viable as Windows for normal desktop use. OpenOffice is every bit as good as MS office. Firefox of course is on Linux. Instant messengers Gaim a,d Kopete, both multi client, are good. Media players like XMMS or AmaroK for audio or Mplayer or VLC for Video (Even Real Player has a linux port).
I used Windows from 3.1 on, and IE since MS put Netscape out of buisness. I prefer Linux.
Who exactly wrote that first post, some random guy from some other forum, rite?
Also,
Firefox - Not overrated (much)
Linux - Definatly overrated
Windows - Would be pretty decent if it wasn't so bloated. I have to do an hour or so worth of work to de-bloat every XP installation I do, and theres still a bunch of useless stuff I can't uninstall or disable.

non-apple PPC hardware <b>is</b> available, like <a href='http://browse.to/emerald/review2/peg2review.html' target='_blank'>this</a> for instance. Didn't your mother ever tell you not to fix things that aren't broken?
That being said, my ideal OS would be Linux with features of Windows.
Firefox on the other hand is much better, it may be overrated, but not by much. The amount of spyware/adware/viruses I get with firefox is 100% less then IE. I don't get any anymore. I also used to get about 40 things put themself on my computer every time I opened IE before.

It's there, it sucks compaired to Apple's.
That link is a 1Gzh G4.
And that kind of hardware is rare.
Let Apple make CPU's like AMD or Nvidia, and give out the specifications to other manufacturers so they can release motherboards and stuff.
It's not very easy to find PPC hardware, let alone recent PPC hardware unless you get a whole new system from Apple.

Heard of Quake 3, Doom 3, Tribes 2, Neverwinter Knights, Unreal Tournament (200x)? Heard of Cedega? And what other things might you be talking about?
If you want to play games with any hope of success, you MUST use windows. I think thats a crock, but hey, thats me.

Let people use what browser they want.
Most games come out Windows only first. I mainly speak of Phantasy Star Online and Natural Selection at the moment. It's normally much easier to get games working on Windows then Linux.
