<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->In a press release issued today, the MPAA has filed lawsuits against six (6) independent BitTorrent indexing sites. This move comes as little surprise, as many of the MPAA's members also hold considerable interest in TV production as well. In addition, according to a recent survey by Envisional, TV piracy (especially on BitTorrent) as increased by 150%.

“Internet thievery of all creative materials is unacceptable and these thieves need to realize they are not anonymous,” said MPAA President and CEO Dan Glickman. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Ok what I am confused is some of these discussions that I have read around following these news.

One side says that yeh TV downloads are illegal etc etc.

But suprisingly there is another side that says TV downloads are actually legal? As in equivalent to recording it on your VCR and passing the tape to a friend. And that it is actually good for the industry?

I am really confused. Anyone knows?

Edit: On a side note, now i am gonna be a constant nagging from the gf asking where is her new eps of OC and L Word

    Basically, if it's not authorized, it's not legal.

    Just with recording tapes and handing them around, there's no way to know about it. Once you make those "tapes" into "files" and spread them across the internet, your 80 year old grandmother could find them with enough effort.

    So yeah this was bound to happen in my opinion. A few Pirate Ships sunk here and there, it happens. Feel sorry for 'em but hey, BT lives on I guess, for the others.

    I think the biggest legal problems with download sites are that the tv shows were originally released on a pay-per-view service or channel, like digital cable or HBO, and that the commercials are taken out.

    Well they have every right to file these lawsuits in my opinion. But people are just going to get more devious though.

    :: EDIT ::
    Frankly I don't think the commercials being taken out angers them too much since it was to be expected.

    It's the lack of control. By having unauthorized users distribute their copyrighted work, the copyright owners don't have the ability to control the way it is distributed.

    I believe it's illegal to actually use the record function of your vcr for anything besides making duplicates of your own home movies.

    Ive been doing some further reading and apparently MPAA is still going on a long pursuit of banning the VCR (or mayb just the record function)

    This isn't really any different than when vcrs were brand new and the industry was suing sony over betamax...

    You're kidding, right? Without commercials, there would be no TV, except for maybe HBO-type channels.

    Yeah... but why would anyone leave them in when copying the file to their computer? Its more space... and no one likes to watch commercials.

    Exactly. They have no reason to be angry at the pirates for that. It's not like they'd keep the commercials when they encode the video. The idea is ludicrous.

    So the MPAA may be less surprised by that, I should think. Certainly they have no room for anger.

    :: EDIT ::
    In fact, the Eye of Azureus is angry at YOU, MPAA.

    Removing the commercials for their own copies is permitted, I believe. <b>Distributing</b> is not allowed.

    I'm really not sure if the MPAA should be the one going after TV download sites though. Eh. But I can think of ways it would hurt people making TV shows and the broadcasters.

    That being said, they should just bleeping roll with it and roll out their own BT distribution system. For a fee you could say, download episodes from the station itself or something. The problem with it is that people can watch the shows before it reaches them via their local TV station. Thus the MPAA sees this as bad, but I think its more of a flaw of the antiquated distribution system <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
