<div class="IPBDescription">Radeon 9600 Pro</div> Yes... an oldie... but a goodie... now the problem is when I'm playing a game I get some WEIRD stuff appearing.. if you guys really wanna see it I'll take some ss's of it, but it's like things "stretch", textures "invert" opening the console in Half Life and NS is a gamble cause it MIGHT screw the textures...
I think it's cause i'm on a 64 bit system with an older graphics card... if that's true then what card should I get WITHOUT breaking my bank?
If you guys want more info, I'll post a full DxDiag in here <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
EDIT- here's a pic- see those black triangles? Those SHOULDN"T be there... this happens in MANY different games, from Act of War (the one I took that in) to Half Life 2, to Half Life 1...

the driver update page is a little... confusing... 0o'
So I just started testing all the drivers out there and used the best ones for my card. In combination with the entire system. This included bios upgrades for card and mobo and mobo driver changes...
Also have you tried the card in another NONE 64 bit pc. Or maybe up/down grade your bios of the 9600pro, maybe ati has a fix for it to run on the 64 bit platforms. Just read some of their change notes to see if there is something in there about this problem. Do the same for all of their drivers.
Other then that I only have one thing to say. WTH ARE YOU DOING WITH A 64BITS SYSTEM IN COMBINATION WITH THIS OLD 3D CARD <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Also HL2 and 9600pro... I dunno, I don't see any chemistry here if ya catch my drift <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
For a budget upgrade either upgrade to ATI:
9700/9800 pro or xt (not the SE). However I don't think the 9700pro or 9800xt is that easially available anymore. You might want to have a look into the x700/800pro or above.
Or Nvidia's:
6600GT or 6800GT series
actually, the 9600 Pro runs HL2 fairly well... constant 60+ fps even in intense fight scenes.
*shrug* I hope to get an x800 or maybe the geforce
What is the BEST low price GeForce... and I mean good quality, quiet, and DOESN"T need it's own nuclear power plant (lol @ 5800 that needed it's own plug XD )
He took a drastic step and reverted back to the CD the card came with (like 4.3....) i just reverted to the 5.2s and they seem to work.
Notice it mostly in Source, half the 2d textures are corrupted, and all the lighting is messed.

Best low priced Geforece is a FX 5700, $129.99. It also doesn't require an extra plug like the 5900.

Be aware that the Geforce FX series runs DirectX9 games badly.

In DX9 in HL2, the $50 Radeon X300SE beats the Geforce $150 FX5900XT!
Frankly, if I was buying a new card, I wouldn't get anything lower than a 6600GT.
The one I tested ran at a buss of 450mhz (it was over clocked) so it was the same speed as the 6600 but didn't require a PCI express slot. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
You're right, it would do worse and still be more expensive than a X300SE.

You can overclock the 6600GT and you can get <a href='http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Manufactory=&PropertyCodeValue=679%3A10550&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=696%3A9639&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&PropertyCodeValue=0&description=&MinPrice=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=48&Submit=Property' target='_blank'>an AGP 6600GT.</a>
So WHat's a mid-range ATI X card I can get? Like, between the $50 x300 and the $500 x850 SE
?

I'm going to disagree, once more from what I saw of the 5700.
Before I upgraded to a new tower(pretty much). I wanted more from my video card, I hada 5900 at the time, and I switched to a 5700 (it had 256MB) and was running much higher clock speed (450mhz, compared to 250). Not only did my frames in very game double, but it also ran quieter then the 5900.
Of course, my power supply wasn't large enough for the extra power the video card needed (I only had a 200 watt PSU). Thusly I opted to upgrade everything else since I was doing it.
Finally that 5700, was from BFG, which has really awesome cards. :-)
x800 and x800 pro cards are an idea, but the x800 XL is really better unless you like a very overclockable core (can unlock 4 more pipes on some cards and 130nm instead of 90nm) with the x800 pro, or just want to have something with x800 in the name, then go with the original (about as powerful as an x700, i think, but a little more expensive.
Next level down on the ATi side is the x700 pro, you can probably find them under 200 bucks, but they have only 128 bit memory (i believe).
Then comes the x600, which you can get for less than 150, and is a moderately more powerful next generation 9600....
For nVidia, i'd stick with the current generation, so get a 6600GT or 6800, since the 6800 GTs are usually more than 300 bucks, both of these other cards will give quite admirable performance, and new shaders when games actually support them.
Any of these cards would be cheaper than 300 USD and would give you a good performance boost.
As long as they dont release a new line of cards by mid august, thats what Im getting for my upgrade <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I've recently heard tell that AMD and ATI don't exactly get along on the 64 bit spectrum... is that true?
Also- is NS not compatible with software mode anymore? My lil bro wants to play NS, and his PC can't handle it, but has a Radeon 7000 in it (bad CPU, slow HD, old, little, slow RAM) but my dad's is similar to mine but 32 bit and without any vid card (onboard graphics + sound) so it's either D3D or Software... and Software doesn't work 0o'
BTW- best NVidia for under $200 is?
of course I can't prove it, but long story short, I too am gonna go nvidia soon :>
*edit* maybe its just the 9600 pros
I can't find any other good reason
6600 GT. AGP and PCI-E versions, as well as 128MB and 256MB configurations. Mix and match, its a really nice GPU.
If it were just best graphics under 200:
I am inclined to mention the x700 pro, but its marginally more expensive, dosent have the new shader support, and really can only be found in PCI-E versions (there are a couple AGP ones in existance, yes, but they're hard to find.
But nVidia still wins. (and im an ati fanboi)
About 2 months ago I sent an e-mail to ATI asking for help
Yesterday, I got a reply with a DL link for new drivers that aren't on their site <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--><!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I can't believe they CUSTOM MADE me drivers! YAY! *huggles*
And yes, it DID resolve all my issues!
