56k, Anyone?

while looking at the new DOA pictures thread,i was drawn by the thought of bump-mapped bewbies, i noticed that the thread starter had the helpful idea of including the standard "56k beware" warning for a thread full of pictures, this brought up a question, how many NS forumers actually still have 56k, the very thought of playing NS itself on a 56k boggles me, i am truly boggled.

so, how many of you have 56k still? and if so, why do you still have it? and if a mod would be so kind as to administer a 56k yes / 56k no poll option, that would be lovely.

I haven't had dialup for 5 years now, but the only reason I can see anyone using it is because broadband is either too expensive for them or unavailable.

Been a long time since I had dialup. God knows I couldn't handle going back now. Ooohh no.

Had dialup not long ago, broadband was unavailable to me. Got broadband, whole new world. Don't know how I used to be able to aim in NS before.

Have broadband in college, have dial up at home. Not going back home for the summer. Does that sum it up for you?

I hate people like that. TBH the only difference for me between 56k and 2mb broadband is the download speed amd the fact that it's always on.

Maybe I'm not pr0gam0r enough. "OLolo yoor packet rate choke is at 52526 and not 52527 n000b! thats why you keep missing!!!!11"

I started my internet "career" on dual ISDN, which was, fortunately, a little better than plain old 56k modems.

Some... 5 years ago (?? can't really remember), switched to ADSL and never looked back, logically.

You say that, but guys like me, who have 6.8 GB torrents/downloads going throughout the week really get their bang for their buck. Broadband isn't really about gaming for a lot of us.

That was kinda my point. I hate people who change ISP's every month to get a ping smaller by 5ms.

Dial-up internet is like masturbating to nigh-orgasm then suddenly stopping, running to the bathroom and dousing your genitals in ice water.

I view broadband as one of the essentials for life:

    - Water
    - Food
    - Electricity
    - Broadband
    - Shelter

    (in that order)

Oh but I can sympathize with you, my dear brothers. I remember well the trials and toils of a non-broadband connection. I started out on a 2400 baud modem (that's 2.4K a second kids) on some local BBS's. I first got Internet access a few months before the web (html/http) came out. I still remember very well how I had to wait like 2 hours to download a 200K GIF file of a chick topless in a boat. Yes they used GIF back then. And you actually had to run a seperate program that ran in a 640x480 DOS window to view the pictures too. :P

    Ah the good ol days...

/me goes to Shacknews to download 1GB of HD 720p E3 previews in 45 minutes

ugh, an unhealthy number of people who have yet to see the light and continue to wallow in the pain and misery of 56k's dark embrace.

i remember, way back in 1999, my dad was telling me about this new kind of internet, he called it "adsl", i was in shock, "7 times faster then what we have now dad? that's impossible!" oh how naive i was... how gloriously naive.

I feel sorry for all 56kers.

Ive had cable (4Mb/sec i believe) for a year and a half, before then i wasn't part of any forum, spent less than .5 hours on AIM a week, had never heard of IRC, and had only really played multiplayer on lan.

Wow, i dont know how i survived....
