<div class="IPBDescription">Awesome Little Program.</div> I've been playing with Terragen for about 30 minutes now and whipped up a few cool (I think so anyway!) images.

In the order that I made them:

<img src='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.taylor2/images/renders/render%2001.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
(I was trying to line-up the sun and the camera on this one.)

<img src='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.taylor2/images/renders/render%2002.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
(I was trying for a snowy sunset type thingy)

<img src='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.taylor2/images/renders/render%2003.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
(Just messing around with the "Moon" texture I found on a Yahoo Group.)

<img src='http://homepage.ntlworld.com/pete.taylor2/images/renders/render%2004-full.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
(My favourite so far. Reminds me of a scene from Lord Of The Rings. I just need to add 2 huge statues now. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

I'll start playing around with reflections etc tomorrow night.

Have a play around the program and post any cool pics you come up with.
I'm sure you can do better than me and my rushed efforts.

    You're first image is insanely similar to one of my own renders...

    Rendering at 4096 x 3072 is awesome <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    No offence but it looks like every other Terragen/Bryce work. I can't say I'm a fan of it.

    I used to use it to render maps for total annihilation (You set the camera to look straight down). Those renders would take like 4 hours though, since the image had to be 50k x 50k and such. Good times. They made some fantastic maps.

    But it's vaguely pretty and really dang easy. So there's that.

    Yup I started with terragen and moved on to bryce and am currently learning Maya.

    I must say it is quite easy and fun. :-)

    Only really made <a href='http://www.deviantart.com/view/7997255/' target='_blank'>one thing</a> with terragen before, other than that i find the interface entirely lacking and a huge pain to work with, so i don't bother.

    I made a few terragen pieces in my day but I haven't played with in a long while.

    w00t it sure has advanced quite a bit if memory serves right.

    I used to use it....a couple of years back. The only thing I ever did were mountains and stuff....and the occasional sunset/sea picture
  • CyndaneCyndane Join Date: 2003-11-15 Member: 22913Members
    Thats because Rave that is all it can do. It is as about as limited in 3d modeling as you can get. :-)

    while the terragen stuff looks amazing, its not really good for most kinds of modelling, its very specific to landscapes, and at that, it dosen't seem to even allow trees and rocks....

    I would maybe use it if there was an easy way to export the scene into another more comprehensive 3d modelling program, or if you could import many other objects into it and manipulate them.

    I was fairly sure you could export hieght-maps...
    ...which is pretty much all you could make with it, besides renders...
    It's a fun little program though... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Calling terragen a modeling suite is pretty far fetched. All it does well is make landscapes, and it does so using language and concepts the common non 3D artist can understand. It's nice for making BG images and skyboxes with a little photo editing.

    Skyboxes ftw. My team used terragen extensively for Desert Derby skyboxes. Good stuff.
