Help Me Upgrade My Computer

I want to start playing NS and hl2
I have 450mhz amd right now. with 6mb video card. 128mb ram.
that means i cant' even play NS D:
I opened this website with a list of all MBs, proccesors and video cards, and because i am not an expert i don't know the best selection and i don't trust the salesman lol.
I'm not a rich man. so i don't want the latest releases / expensive products.
just a computer that will run HL2 and i don't even need the best graphics quality. medium will do lol.
So.. I need to buy a new MB, Proccesor, Video Card and RAM. I got the rest (i think)
Can someone please help me build a new computer? THANKS IN ADVANCE!

OMG you poor poor man!
quick earn some dollar and spend spend spend!!
get a custom built computer if you can.
I'm not a total computer nub, i'm just confused by the differences between Intel and Athlon processors (other than Athlon is just better) in terms of performance. I'd assume that more expensive = better, but I know from past experience this isn't always the case.
Anyway, the barebones bundles in question can be seen here. My mum is looking to spend around £200 ish. Doesn't sound like a lot, but don't forget £ > $
Incidentally, what's the difference between the £203 Athlon 3000 and the £255 one? The cheaper one looks to be better but surely that can't be right....
MB: GIGABYTE*: K8NS (s754) Nforce3 250
Video Card: GF FX5500 256MB,TV,DVI
DDR: 512Mb 400MHz Kingston CL2.5
that will cost me around 500 USD
how's that?

GOOD! Except the FX Card, you will be sorely dissapointed. Get a 9800 Pro
Yeah you need 1GB, regardless of what anyone tells you.
Thats what I use, 9800 pro (Its a radeon)
At your price range definatly.
The ATi 9XXX series in most cases will be much more powerful than the FX equivilent.

oh...
what about RADEON 9550 TV,DVI 256MB ?
Nil, the Novatech 3000 that cost just over £200 is a socket 754 A64 3000+, packed onto an SiS (ick) based motherboard, AGP slot, and is generally worse than the £255 one.
The £255 one is packing a socket 939 A64 3000+, which is actually faster than the S754 one, it actually has only 256MB RAM, but is sat on a CK8-04 chipset, which happens to be one of the finest nForce 4 editions out there, aside from the SLi one. It also has a 16x PCIe slot, as opposed to these old-**** AGP ones. I would say get the £255 one, slot in a Gigabyte 6200TC (remember kids, we're working to a budget, sort of...).
To compliment the TC card, you'll also be need another 512MB DDR400, to allow for the TurboCache techonology to work properly.
For both of those, 6200TC being £41.70, and the RAM being £33.98, it would bring the whole lot to around £330, plus carriage.
Not a bad system for a casual gamer to play on. That lot should run The Sims 2 at 1024x768, with everything cranked up to 10
I would go with an athlon (non 64) system just cause U can get a good cpu and motherboard combo for under 150 USD.
And yes, a gig of ram decreases load times, increases multitasking ability, and the source engine even accounts it for some detail settings. My brothers comp has a slightly better graphics card and cpu, but only reccomends medium model detail cause he only has 512MB ram.
If you want some decent graphics though, i would go with a GeForce 6600 AGP (since PCIE is not supported in any socket A motherboard I know of....)
and if you want a good cpu, I have an athlon XP 2800 which is easily OCed to faster than my brother's XP 3200, so it can save you 30 or 40 bucks.
O and btw, 256MB video memory is definitely not necissairy if you don't need high settings. HL² runs just great on cards with 128MB (im running all high no AA no AF with my 128MB 9600 pro).
If you want a better cpu though, go athlon 64 and go for a GeForce 6600 or 6600GT or an radeon x600 in PCI express, getting a cpu with a roughly equivalent speed in 32 or 64 bit, the biggest benifit to going with an athlon 64 is PCI express, so don't choose an AGP motherboard.
As for the Athlon 64 socket differences:
939: 2000 MHz HT bus, dual channel memory, can be upgraded farther
754: 1600 MHz HT bus, single channel memory controller, can be upgraded to 3700 (no farther, and not x2 when it comes out).
