Everything's Gone Dark

Windows XP Pro x64
Here's an interesting one.

Before changing to XP x64 earlier on today, I was playing NS, quite happily, with my blue color for Marines, and my yellowy-brown for aliens, white for everyone else. Also present was all the icons for any upgrades that were being researched, and my experience bar in Combat was visibly filling nicely.

However, after the change to x64, all hell broke loose. Every team was in green, apart from any unassigned players (ie, those in RR, or spectators), the icons appear, but are very dark, and the Combat experience bar is black, and I can't tell how far up I am to the next level.

Also present on the screen, when I join a game, or when I open and close the console, are the words "Display doesn't support downloadable gamma".

This problem has only happened since installing x64. Every other game works perfectly, althought I haven't tried it with any other HL based games.

System spec is the normal.

CPU: A64 3500+
M/B: Asus A8n-SLi, running driver version 6.39 nForce4 Standalone, 64-bit version.
GFX: 2x XFX 6600GT Gamer's Ed. in SLI formation, running driver version 76.80, 64-bit drivers, drivers downloaded from Guru3d.com, as the nVidia offical ones don't support SLi.

I have tried reinstalling Steam, and NS, complete removal and installation (yay for 2Mbps line, and some painting to do...), to no avail.

Every other game works perfectly under x64 (though Steam is a **** to install), and Halo STOPs me, but other than those, the new platform is very stable.

Checked the Steam FAQ, which has nothing for x64

The symptoms you describe also occur when NetMeeting is run. The problem is the conflict with the video drivers.

My hypothesis would be that you have an extra service or application running under XP 64 that you did not have before.

I'd recommend going through the services list looking for this, (although what exactly you are looking for I could not say,) reinstall video drivers, and perhaps testing NS after an msconfig "diagnostic" startup.

    Good luck.

Reinstalled VGA drivers, disabled extra services, disabled SLi...

    Nothing.

Installed nVidia 71.80 x64 drivers, still nothing.

I guess this is something I'm going to have to live with, until with Valve, or nVidia do an update.

Sounds like it isnt loading textures. Note: You can just copy the "steam" folder from one machine to another and it will run with steam.exe. Might try installing it on a non 64bit OS and copy it over. Also, did you email nvidia about it? I'd do that just for giggles it may help.

if you run the game in software mode even though it isnt supported the scoreboard is exactly what you describe.

all the player names are green. it could be your video drivers, when you uninstalled your drivers did you use drivercleaner to completely uninstall?

It actually happened on the first install of the video drivers. Looked in the inf for the official ones, saw that SLi mode was missing, and thought "best get me some others then..."

I didn't use driverclean when uninstalling the drivers, as they were being replaced by a fresh download, with the same files, which is a perfect overwrite.

Axel, I tried copying my old NS installation from mum's PC, but x64 moaned, saying "Program has not undergone x86 compatibility setup, and will now close", whoops to that idea. It's actually loading the textures fine, just not applying the gamma settings to the mini-icons.

I am running X64 too and get these exact problems, using 71.84 x64 detonators, but I do not really care about these problems, I can put up with them.

    WinX64 OEM Final, 3700+ Clawhammer S754, 6600GT AGP

Edit: Installing steam, just install to "C:\PROGRA~2\Steam". "PROGRA~2" is the short filename for the "Program Files (x86)" folder.

Have you guys attempted resorting back to the 41.x drivers?

I use only the old driver that came with my computer because 1. it allows me to get 120mhrz with a high res, and I get a higher fps on everything. Also, easy AA and Anis changing. Try that.... I really, really suggest using the old drivers.

Maybe people aren't understanding the whole x64 thing.

Windows XP Pro, x64 edition, needs 64-bit drivers for EVERY bit of core hardware in the system. Installing the 41.XX drivers will not only screw up x64, but it will also not find either mine, or Mashu's GTs. I think the earliest version of the ForceWare graphics pack we can use is something like 61.16, or something like that.

Even that doesn't support x64, I think 71.84 is the lowest full driver that actually support x64...

Mashu, I just installed mine to C:\Steam, and everything is fine, the version of the installer that Valve uses isn't really x64 ready

I'm having the exact same problem. I have been having this problem for a long time. However I am not on a X64 system. I have a P4 2.0Ghz system. I am running windows 2003 server. I have tried different drivers and I am using the latest beta driver now but still have the problem. Anyone have a fix for this?

Like I said, this problem is for the 2003 editions of the OS'es, which includes Windows XP Pro x64, and Windows 2003 Server.

I know that nVidia are aware of the problem, and are apparently fixing it, but I don't know about ATi, or any other graphics manufacturer. I can't work out a fix for it, so it is just one of those things that we'll have to put up with.

The very second I can work a fix out, I'll be posting it up here, don't you worry about that...
