However weird it may sound
Does the darkness of night (Take note of this, it IS different being in the darkness of night than it is being in a dark room, or cave) convey a comforting, protective feeling or a cold, lost feeling? Or perhaps something in between? How do you feel in the darkness?

And why do you think you feel that way?

I'll spit out my own response in a moment, I don't like to...contaminate responses with my own. I (probably erroneously) belive it promotes one view over the other.

I prefer sleeping in a dark room... And darkness doesn't bother me, really. Dunno why. Could be the result of years of telling myself that fear of the darkness is irrational. The only animal I have to fear in the darkness is another human, and their night vision is just as poor as mine.

Both, it depends on the situation I'm in. If I'm walking down an unfamiliar road on my own then it feels threatening but otherwise I feel more at home at night than I do the day.

I am ... friends with the darkness. It covers, overwhelms me like a blanket of solitude. While the darkness is often signified to loss with me, occasionally the darkness turns it's head to face south. While the darkness creates a cover of loneliness, it often offers itself as my companion, and will walk with me down the road of time.

I'm that way because I'm semi-goth.

I gotta agree with the rest here. In unfamiler situations, darkness only adds to your distress. If you know the area you're in, darkness kinda makes you feel powerful, you can move about without anyone seeing you! Scary!

I guess it depends on how "busy" an area is at night vs. daytime. I would imagine most of the people reading this forum are in an urban or suburban area, so darkness isn't really an issue at night like it would be in a rural area. Do you really want to walk through a poorly-lit area and step in an unseen pile of poo, or hit a spider web with your face?

darkness is scary as it stands for the unknown, in the darkness you cant see, therefor the unknown lies ahead

I personally love the darkeness, whether it be a city night, or out in the country.

Living in both situtations, I found both of them equally enjoyable.

I suppose it is because I feel safer at night then I do during the day... wierd no?

I will not fear
Fear is the mindkiller,
Fear is the little death
That brings total Oblivion
I will permit my fear to pass
Over me and through me
And where it has gone
I will turn the inner eye
Nothing will be there
Only I will remain.

Im from the Frozen Tundra, so Night conveys a cold feeling. Not a cold lost feeling, but a cold, exciting feeling.

I associate Night with Cold, because up in the frigid wastelands, night IS cold!

Well, after reading these, perhaps we should all relate our general setting. I've lived in both suburban and rural settings, and I actually find that the rural night is MORE comfortable, there's a certain...peace and respect that permeates the atmosphere when you can stand on an open field and just -barely- see the line of trees in the distance.

Also, when I'm in an unknown area, I don't care if it's day or night. In the day, things are obvious and open, in the night they are concealed, but that also provides you with the same protective covering. And I also find that in loneliness darkness can be a perfect companion. If you find this to be true, I prescribe silence for daytime use. You can dissociate yourself from a lot of the world this way.

But I digress: The responses only lead to another few questions. So let's go over them.

We started with "Do you like the darkness of night?"

Now we lead to the following:
What type of darkness do you see during the night, the healthy glow of a nearby city, or the proud and bright shining of stars and moon?

If you've experienced both, which is it that you prefer?

This would depict my walking into my own backyard anytime prior to sunrise ... mounds of duck doo-doo to dodge and dozens of cobwebs, everywhere.

I experience so many different types of darkness it would be difficult to answer the author's question without going off on several tangents, so I'll mention only my favorite: being anchored in a boat on a very calm body of water (re: no wind) in total darkness and a cloudy sky - no city lights visible, no stars, no moon, no light whatsoever ... and only a very gentle rocking of the boat due to your own movement, listening to a gentle lapping of the water against the hull. This has to be the most peaceful, relaxing darkness I have ever experienced in my life, ever.

In the city:

Night + quiet = scary as hell. Get paranoid that someone can be just looking ready to jump you

Night + people about = nice. Generally people having a good time, having fun with friends and easier to relax if there isn't the sun burning your face off like during the day. Although it can be ruined by people looking out for trouble.

In the countryside.

Night + quiet = peaceful, relaxing and beautiful.

Night + noisy = annoying.
