Horrendous Ping Fluctuation

<div class="IPBDescription">Having some serious trouble</div> Ok my hard drive recently crapped it's pants and died, and I just installed an identical new one. However upon reinstalling NS, I find myself unable to play in games because of my horrible ping fluctuation, of anywhere between 20 and 500. I never had any trouble with this sort of thing, and have tried opening all sorts of ports.

Is there a particular port necisary to run NS? This problem does not occur with any other steam game. Any help is much appriciated, thanks!

Have you maxed out your rate/cl_rate? made sure cl_updaterate isnt above 50 but isnt below 30? Also, check if windows might be updating in you system tray, or anything might... That often causes horrendous lag spike. Try not to have too many system straining processes going on in the background also.

It's not so much the system processes that can affect pings, it's more the applications that are using your internet connection at the same time. The most common thing is that people are downloading updates, or things via t'Internet

Make sure that you're not downloading anything from the internet, make sure that Steam isn't updating anything also. Check system for infections, and (if you're on a router) boot any other users off their connections before playing.

See if any of those fixes it
