I used to listen to quite a bit of the extreme metal scene from the Scandavian regions. Bands like:

    1. Emperor
    2.) Zyklon
    3. ) Myrkskog
    4.) In Flames

    And that's just for starters.

I don't believe much of my music is from the US, but it's mostly Electronica so you might not know them either.

Coming to think of it, I don't know any European artists in other genres..

I did an essay on German music recently, so I picked up a few. None of them are really my cup of tea, although a few have their moments.

    Wir sind Helden
    Die Ärzte
    Rosenstolz
    Mia
    Silbermond
    Xavier Naidoo
    Udo Lindenberg
    Juli

But, of course, whilst not quite "up to date", there's always Kraftwerk. Aah, Kraftwerk.

EDIT: I just rememberd that I'm not American, but I guess this can apply to me too, because we know about as much about German music in Britain as in the US (probably).

raz0r: Good show, Muse are awesome.

Thats were we differ. Germans listen to any music, as long as it sounds good.

My favorite band is Fury in the Slaughterhouse.

Sadly, I doubt that I would count as "American." I am not only fluent in a foreign language (gasp! German), I have also spent 2 years overseas.

[edit] I also really like ATB, but I think you were avoiding the techno realm of "music" [/edit]

    o_O. They're Australian.

    ...

Let's see... Muse, Rammstein, Daft Punk, Roots Manuva, The Darkness. I've heard of Kraftwerk but I can't name any of their songs.

Refused...they broke up a while back, but they were a great swedish (I think) hardcore punk band....Thier last album, The Shape of Punk To Come is one of the best albums I've ever purchased,

Then of course, one of my favorite bands, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, is from Canada.

And for those few of you who like (hell those of you who know what I'm talking about) noise music, theres is always Merzbow. I think their Japanese...great music in any event.

Another great Japanese noise band Is Malt Banana.

Actualy the more I think of it, most of my favorite bands are not from the US.

Radiohead was already mentioned, as were the Beatles.

The Velvet Underground is another great cLassic UK band.

And of course Oasis, though to be honest I suppose their mostly a nostalgic favorite of mine...

Air is a pretty cool French electronic group

Bjork is Icelandic, and hopefuly I don't need to wax anymore on how outstanding her music is...

Sigur Ros is another great Icelandic band, one of my overall favorite bands.

Amr Diab makes some great arabic pop music.

Yeah...I suppose I could go on, but in short, theres a ton of great of music out there, both from the US and outside of it, just be willing to look beyond the rather narrow scope of our radio and mainstream media's music coverage to find these and other great bands....
