<div class="IPBDescription">hurry!</div> I need to know how to completly disable the ability for a computer on my home network to access a certain domain name, through any browser. Preferably with tools built into Windows XP and not 3rd party software.
Please, gah!!! <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

This link has information on the hosts file:
<a href='http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm</a>
[edit]To clarify:
1. You go to the folder holding your hosts file. This differs depending on which version of Windows you're using, so look it up at the abovelinked site.
2. You open it in Wordpad or Notepad. Wordpad is better if you're like me and have a ton of entries, but I'll explain that after you're done reading this to solve your immediate problem.
3. Towards the end of the document, you add a line like <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->0.0.0.0 whateverSiteHere.com<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2--> or <!--c1--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->127.0.0.1 whateverSiteHere.com<!--c2--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->
What does this do? Every time your computer wants to access whateverSiteHere.com, the request will get looped back right to your very own machine. It won't find the thing it's looking for at whateverSiteHere.com, so it'll just give up.
4. Don't forget to save. And when you do, don't forget to leave the hosts file without an extension! The .txt extension Notepad might automatically give it will keep it from working as intended.
The beauty of this is that you can block a ton of bannerads or popup ads that are run by ad-distributing companies. The abovelinked site has a LARGE hosts file that you can copy-paste into your own hosts file.
The user that I don't want accessing this domain uses Firefox, and is uneffected by the hosts file. It's blocked in IE though.

I find that surprising....stuff in the hosts file is blocked in Firefox for me, so I don't know what else to say <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
He just registered as FuzzyBunny
Anyway, I downloaded the AddBlock extention and added unknownworlds.com to it as the whole site, it now won't connect.
:edit: as a sidenote, ban FuzzyBunny
I'm always over curious.

Does this even bear answering? Come on Cyndane, he's Caboose's brother. Of course Caboose wants him banned. They have that sort of sibling-hate relationship.

Two different Computers I think.
Oh <i>it is</i>, Misti.

Am I? The sibling-rivalry phenomenon is well known. Search your heart young one, you know it to be true.
P.S. Haha I know your name and you don't know mine.

<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showuser=53319' target='_blank'>Fuzzybunny, eh? Could this be him?</a>
but in all seriousness i say dont block him let him meet the freaks of the internet
That could get annoying for him though.
Yus! And, I've said things here that I rather he not read <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->
He is effectivly banninated though, I have a windows password, a Linux password, a grub password, a bios password. He prety much can't do anything on this computer.
I've also blocked the domain unknownworlds.com from the hosts file and from firefox using the addblock extention.
Banninating him wouldn't hurt though. I'd say ban by IP, but as we share the same external IP, that'd be bad... He's gotten me banned from DoD servers before by IP because he's a little hacking CS playing smacktard.
Yes, my brother is the 11 year old CS hacker we all hate, he goes only to servers where VAC is disabled, and constantly downloads hacks. The other day, I found this out, when I was trying to fix somthing for him and AVG cought a nice virus named somthing like CShax.exe
Yea, I don't trust my brother near my computer... Or my forums <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
