Er... How slow does your character get? I'm more of a speed-type guy, I love MvC2 and only play on Turbo2...

What sort of pace do the ship battles have?

And as for your last point...

Oh the swordfights can be awesomely fast depending on who you fight. Against a bunch of dutch merchants you'll win every time. Against a Sloop of War crewed by spanish pirate-hunters you'll be fighting for your life. It's usually a case of

    *attack merchant vessel*

    OMG, this is easy!

    *attack fellow pirate*

    OMG! EASY!

    *attacked by pirate hunter*

Ok, that was kind of close....

*attack spanish war galleon full of soldiers*

    OMG! HAX!

Your guy starts of super-fast, but how quickly he loses his skills is kind of random. For each year past a certain age your pirate journeys for, there is an invisible RPG style dice roll on each of your abilities (including the ability to recuit large amounts of sailors in port, speed in sword fights, speed in dancing and ability to woo governor's daughters), and if you fail, you get a little worse in that characteristic.

I got unlucky first time round and my dude was practically crippled by the age of 28 (I think how often you get captured and injured in sword fights impacts how fast you lose abilities) which left me unable to beat the final baddie... my guy just couldn't react fast enough to do anything but defend.

Second time round I made a note of aquiring EVERY item which increases fencing ability (things like armour, a puffy fencing shirt, balanced swords, pistols e.t.c), and didn't have so much of a problem. Let me tell you, that set of perfectly balanced swords might not seem worth 1000 gold coins to a whippersnapper, but you'd sell your granny to get hold of them after you hit the big 3-0 (assuming you rescued your granny from the evil marquis montelban).

How does the fighting control? And is your losing abilities have anything to do with your pace as you progress through the game (i.e. longer you take, more wear you take) or is it set up so that you're pretty much gonna lose your abilites anyway?

I'm not too fond of the idea of getting less powerful through the course of a game...

Definately try the thief series, and splinter cell. I prefer thief myself, though.

Bah! That's the new version. 256 colors DOS Pirates! is the stuff. Though I must admit the lack of cleavage in the old version is a bit disappointing.

Am I seriously the only person in the world that not only didn't hate the gun levels, but thought they were pretty neat?

I found the gun levels terrible - ever solved the artus mission in the higher difficulties without cheating? If so, then I would like to know how, just for the fun of trying it myself

Anyway, JK:II is a great game. I'm just playing Jedi Academy - Lightsaber and Force Powers from the beginning. You can choose the Dark Side at one point in the game, so it's worth playing at least twice. And before I forget: Two Lightsabers or Darth-Maul-Style-Double-Lightsaber!

I started playing Neverwinter Nights a while ago, but didn't have much time since then. A really complex adventure game - complex means you have a huge choice of abilities for your character, of weapons etc.

Jedi Knight II looks pretty cool, and I'm considering that one. But I don't quite like Academy as much, doesn't seem as polished or something. (In the demo level, I could force push almost every Jedi opponent off a cliff. Very funny looking XD )

Freelancer was pretty cool, especially the awesome FPS rates on a lot of the systems I've played it on (including a Celeron 700Mhz with 4MB integrated Intel graphics and 128 MB RAM, which was able to run the game at 60 FPS O:)

There are a lot of good suggestions on here, and a lot of games I hadn't even thought about but am now about ready to buy, but I still haven't found a game that I was originally in the mood for, which is sort of pure action - a game where you just walk between rooms and kick lots of **** (a la Duke3D or Devil May Cry). So far JKII is the only one that seems to be fitting that bill, although games like Theif III, Deus Ex, Freelancer, etc. all have awesome gameplay in a different fashion.

So might anyone know of a non-FPS similar to what I've described?

God damn I want to play that pirates game now.

I want to request an online version, but the chances of someone realizing how awesome that could be are slim.

Unfortunately, multiplayer has never been very strong in Sid Meier's games (when present at all), despite how perfectly suited to multiplayer most of them are (which I suspect is strongly thanks to boardgame influences).
