I like Generals enough to play it every once and awhile, even though I'm bad at it. I loved homeworld 2, and it takes me everything I have not to buy it when I go into a game store. (I have too many video games. I don't need another one, and I need those 40 dollars for other things)
I started my RTS career on Age of Empires, though. I love that game..
there are only 3 RTS's I can stand to play AOE2, EE1, and HW2. what they did to EE2 was unforgivable, all they needed to do was up the graphics, add a new feature here and there, improve the AI and they would of been set.
I played the demo of EE2 and thought it was a spiritual successor to RON or something, because the loading screens and everything else looked identical. Really crappy game though.

I mean they could make a pretty convincing case simply by getting two computers and comparing the two games.
I would throw the book at them, and also the shelf from which it came.

Rome: Total War is different from the rest in that there are effectively two games: the turn-based managerial side, where you look after your cities and build/move armies. Whenever two armies bump into each other, it moves to a battlefield in real time. Have you ever played Civilisation or the like? Imagine Civ, but whenever armies fight, you control the fight yourself. You can actually let the computer auto-generate the results of a fight, but you can probably do better.
Age of Empires 2 is pure RTS, but there's a lot more depth to the macro (resource management, research, etc.) than there is in a lot of RTSs. I'd suggest picking it up cheap, because it is definately one of the (if not the) RTS greats.
C&C: Red Alert 2 was pretty awesome, but I don't know how well it's aged. Same with Dune, although I hated those damn sandworms. (I assume you're not talking about Dune 2000 or whatever, which was arse IIRC.) Yuri's Revenge was pretty crazy, though, IIRC.
I never bought Generals. At the time, my computer wouldn't have been able to run it; and later, I heard bad things about it.

My only gripe with it is that rocket soldiers > all, but whatever. I can micro their lasers, so I'm not complaining.
