Using Game Engines For Movies
So as I went through one of the last cutscenes for Doom3, I was thinking of a new and interesting way to make and download movies, however it would defeat some purposes of having a dvd/theatre/vhs system.
A person wouldn't have control throughout the entire mod for a game, whether it be Quake3, Halflife 2 or Doom3, but whomever put the mod together is using the in-game engine to deliver a story real-time whether it be 30 minutes long or 2 full hours. This does provide a few advantages:
Depending on the game, if you're using in-game textures, how much and how high quality the voice acting is/ sfx, you're getting about the same amount if not less of MB than a divx file.
This also allows the creator to use their imagination without having to use a big budget.
However, people would need to have an up-to-date computer and whatever game it is to watch the "movie." If needs be, I suppose you could export it to AVI. However, I thought it would be an interesting idea. Navigate the menu by walking around in a room to select special features, subtitle options, etc.
I don't want to revolutionize the world with this, it's just a random thought. Treat it as such.

Some good examples are <a href='http://www.redvsblue.com' target='_blank'>Red Vs Blue</a>
and the finalists in the movie catagory of Epics <a href='http://www.unrealtournament.com/ut2003/ct_finals/ct_movie.php' target='_blank'>Make something Unreal</a> contest.
What I am talking about is downloading it as a mod and you hit "start game" and it plays back that way.
...checking into the Make Something Unreal part though.
No they didn't. Wait for the <a href='http://rvb.roosterteeth.com/archive/archive.php' target='_blank'>rolling archive</a> to get to the first episode and start from there.
Basically, your idea is a bad one. Back around the Quake scene there used to be machinima like you describe, distributed as small mods that you'd download and run, but there is one massive flaw with this. Anyone who doesn't have the game can't run it. Simple as that.
So by distributing in a popular video format (avi, wmv, mov, etc) you have a much wider audience than if you distributed in mod format. However, this doesn't stop you doing both.

Ooh, I stopped watching mid-season 2, so this is handy. How often does the archive page get a different set of episodes up?
Heck, even i've done it....
The beggining of the Todengast (or something similiar) mod had a mini sort of movie to it in the beggining. Was pretty cool for its time.
I can send you any old episodes you want.
I have everything RvB has came out with, as I've watched them loong before they were CockBite productions. Infact, I watched their Mac stuff before RvB was even out.
I have the old teaser (episode 0) and the rare announcement trailer all the way up to where I've left off, like episode 40 something.

Its like glorified 33.6.
Or moreso, is anyone working on those types of mods at the moment?
