Hmm, I've actually drawn a few NS comics in my most boring classes. For example, I made one demonstrating all the bugs in the old versions of NS, to show my friend who is just now starting to play. They were actually kind of funny, I guess, but they're on looseleaf and are probably in a garbage dump somewhere so I can't scan them.

I did have a rather large list of sources sorted out here...but now it seems I can't find the school rankings one (where Much of the south is lowest, based on teacher salaries, national test scores, attendance and other factors).
There was also an article where some guy was complaining about how Florida was last in just about everything here. School success really doesn't depend on the state anyway (teachers are a bit important), but more on effort put in. That is: put in nothing and you get nothing, put in a modicum of effort and you'll get something.
I had always figured Wisconsin schools sucked...since more than 50% of my high school was in remedial classes. Then again, 3 of my teachers in the 4 years were golden apple award winners (not that really says much). Anyway, I'm all for secession, death to the Yankees (and the Mets).
Gecko it doesnt even matter on the teacher. So long as they grade a paper your grade is what you earn. Getting knowledge, though, is the teachers job, and by state the graduation exam can be tougher or easier.

The article you referenced was referring to Florida ONLY, and was written by the St. Petersburg Times, argueably the most oppinionated, anti-Republican, non-factual newspaper publication in the state.
I for one would like to see you step outside of the box and away from the stereotypical attitude that so many people north of the Mason Dixon Line have.
Since this thread centers around being bored in class, I merely stressed the importance of making the best of it and completing school, which you HAVE to do in Florida to get a driver's license. I happen to think it's a very good incentive to finish school, on topic and even relevant to the discussion.
On the other hand, your negative references to "those of the Southern persuasion" were not only irrelevant and off topic, I find them repulsive.

The threat of not having a driver's license is a most excellent incentive for staying in school. Florida has received high marks across the nation for pioneering this.
You have yet to justify your stereotypical attitude of Southerners btw, and the need to attack them like you did.

Apparently you've blown a comment about a list I saw in 1996 citing Alabama as the worst state in the nation for High Schools and a paraphrase from Family Guy into The Second Civil War (starring a Rabid Racoon as The Mask). Aside from the absurdity of how you got to this line of thinking, I have no abhorrence for the South (aside from the fact that much of the history past 1900 is boring, but that's true of most other individual parts of the US).
On the actual school based remarks: Much of the available school information is limited to counties and school districts and is not school wide. Which brings me to the fact that many Wisconsin schools (based on this) are vastly different in themselves; I noted that my HS was around 150 (of 291)in state test scores. Apparently sarcasm and facetiousness do not go over well on the internet with some people. On the same line, however, I have no idea what the average ranking of that Florida state Reading and Math test is and can thusly not adequately determine how to judge individual schools (although you and Haze [and others, possibly] might want to go around and check your school versus others).
Perhaps you're thinking "I've got him now, he's backing down from his previous remarks!" I'd have the following two responses: "Feel free to point out a valid initial starting point for this inane tangent in the first place", or "Allow us to bring this minor squabble over nothing into a holocaust at a more convienent location."
On to Haze's question:
Quite a few people I know know about this trick, but it might be unknown in other places. Or, you might not have the right desks for it. They need to have a wire metal basket underneath the seat (the basket's not really the important part, just the way the metal is.
It's just a neat thing to do when you're bored or when you want to show stuff to friends.
For a more in-depth tutorial:
Sit in desk. Wet first two or three fingers. Reach down so that the crease in your fingers is parallel to one of the 'wires' Rub your hand back and forth (but keeping the crease on the wires) If your hand becomes too dry or warm wet again and continue Eventually, if you're doing it right, it will begin to ...hum (can be very loud).
...Everyone should be able to do it, but some people just have an inherent knack for it. Unforunately I haven't encountered such a desk since college, but it's either the wire closet to the ground or the wire angled toward the front of the desk.
You don't just hit the wires or anything like that, it's just a physics principle, like when you make waves in a tub or something and the waves get bigger when you move the tub in tune with them (except with sound). This is like moving your wetted finger in a circle around the lip of a crystal glass (like in that ...blech... movie Miss Congeniality, or in the episode of Family Guy with the hurricane).
If that's not descriptive enough I can try again...heh.

Of course, you could just move a state over, and then drive to Florida and flaunt your lack of high school edu-mi-cation. Not that many of those southern states are really touted for their astronomical GPAs or intelligent youths anyway.
I can only assume my Wisconsin High School wrought 3.7 GPA would force people in Alabama to count to a number higher than 6 (and create a few new letter grades).

I didn't really figure it took much work to get through High School. I mean, I slept through math and English and I still pulled out As and Bs. All you really need to do is hand in your papers on time (they don't even have to be good papers, come on now (unless they're math or science...since those aren't really 'papers').
Which reminds me: Paper airplanes...so many different kinds; and you can say "It's physics homework, I'm testing out various surface areas and aerodynamics to find the best flying plane." Where you procede to make a stunt plane that does 3 loops and flys into the teacher...

I mean my school is filled with smarties. I don't know anyone who scored less than a 1300 on the SATs. Of course, then there's the rest of Georgia...
(Atlanta FTW.)

I didn't think you had any state by state high school gpa rankings, because I couldn't find any either ... so we'll discount that one.

Sorry for venting all, heading back on topic now ... .. .

...taught.
I'm also pretty sure I said that your grades (or more importantly: intelligence gained) depends more on your effort that the school. If I didn't, then it was in the post that got lost with my sporadic connection...but I'm pretty sure it's there. You shouldn't need driving as an incentive to finish school in the first place.
[And no, no GPA based rankings, that would depend a lot on teachers' grading anyway, and we all know everyone had a 10th grade teacher who hated them.]
Back on to the "bored-ness" topic: if you have the cool desks with the wire book basket...thing...underneath, if you lick your first few fingers and then start rubbing the top bar you can get it to resonate if you do it fast enough (water would probably be better, since you'll need it moist more than once). A bit conspicuous since you're moving your arm back and forth, but can be done in the back of class.

... "taught" wouldn't go with "them thar" now, would it? I was speaking in the Southern slang you would expect from all of us.
The threat of not having a driver's license is a most excellent incentive for staying in school. Florida has received high marks across the nation for pioneering this.
You have yet to justify your stereotypical attitude of Southerners btw, and the need to attack them like you did.

Back on topic, if you're bored in class pull out your slingshot (paperwads only), or head to the restroom and leave a condom water balloon.
Sufficient?
I wasn't aware I was being malicious towards the South. If you'd like to point out some point at which I broke out a "The entire South is a black-lynching, slack-jawed nest of inbred rednecks with the intelligence quotient of a stoned racoon that live in hurricane assaulted trailer parks" phrase (anywhere but there ), I'd like to know where you found it.
Reach down so that the crease in your fingers is parallel to one of the 'wires'
Rub your hand back and forth (but keeping the crease on the wires)
If your hand becomes too dry or warm wet again and continue
Eventually, if you're doing it right, it will begin to ...hum (can be very loud).
...Everyone should be able to do it, but some people just have an inherent knack for it.

"Not that many of those southern states are really touted for their astronomical GPAs or intelligent youths anyway." As already stated, this was a diss as you've yet to show us any statistical evidence to back it up. And now your referring to a 9 year old study (with no source). It's rather obvious who your quote from Family Guy is referring to, and that's yet another stigma the South is stuck with.
The whole point is, you attempted to slip all this in thinking it would go unnoticed, when in fact it has derailed the thread as it had no relevance to the topic. You also might consider the use of emoticons in the future, or at least inserting an "lol" as users over the internet can't see or hear you laughing when you joke. I have sent you a PM if you wish to discuss further.
