It's just like the Matrix! They distribute these "programs" only to have people play them and become slaves to their PC, playing day in and day out!

TBH WoW is pretty much what you described. No grinding involved (unless you're into that sort of thing), combat is 25% class, 25% gear. and 50% skill. The damage is location based, so you cant just stand still and mash the buttons.

Here's the best video I could find, since filefront seems to be down. Might be a bit confusing but should give you some idea of the group PvP.

No grinding in WoW? You're totally off your rocker. WoW just dresses up grinding as other things. I really like the game and think it has pretty good combat, but I'm not going to deny the nature of the gameplay.

CoH has some good, fast-paced combat, but it's suffering a global population crash on all but two or three servers. The former NS group fell apart long ago, and the server it (and all my characers) was on is pretty crappy in terms of the players left. That said, the good players are really good, and there isn't the drama an item- and PvP-based game like WoW suffers from. The leveling curve has been corrected a bit, but it still gets pretty brutal by the end.

I play ww2 online not only is it ww2 online because the box release version will be comming out soon (which adds the tiger tank) the game will get an influx of money which will speed up developments and add lots of new stuff includding the yanks and affrica (next yeah late 2006. It is worth looking into but it is not the like of planetside of battlefield it is a sim if you get shot you die you don't get 1000 bullets pumped into you (some times it takes 2 shots to kill you ) it is a greast game you need a little patients but once you get tehre you will never go back go to the forums and have a look
Fly drive sail do it all and in a 1/2 scale world growing by the month

Well maybe I dont see the grind as I consider myself a casual gamer, but I just hit 58 and still think the game is pretty fast to level. I have been playing since release tho.

Considering how formulaic WoW's combat eventually becomes I wouldn't really say that's something to be happy about NGE :/

You're on crack.

Standing still and hitting buttons is all hunters do in PvP. And Shamen (Frost Shock) and Pallies (Bubblehearth!)

Not to mention that a fresh level 60 will get owned by any other level 60; that alone shows how huge the emphasis on equipment is. And oh yeah, how many classes can go 1v1 against a shamen again? The paladin, maybe, and that's only because if he misses his RANDOMLY GENERATED seal of command proc, he can bubblehearth and get away unscathed.

In case you havn't learned of Tabula Rasa (also fron NCSoft) it's worth keeping an eye on. MMO, but with futurisitic weapons. And it's so action oriented that it uses VOICE COMMUNICATION. I have really high hopes for this one.

Sounds a bit like Planetside... although I doubt it'll play out the same.
<s>Videos aren't working though, WMP complains about the link prefix(ftp://), I think.</s>
Unless of course I use m2d h4x and rightclick+Save as...

Woo, the videos really do make it seem very promising! Although my framerate is going to get murdered, no doubt...

Also, as for the launching problems I don't know whats up with that. In 3 years I never had serious problems, even behind routers. Read up on the help forums - last I heard a patch that was around for about 4 days caused some disco problems, so if you had some really rotten luck thats all I can think of.

I would have said City of Heroes, but it's really really really hard to get a group now. The only reason I'm still subscribing is that may be CoV will put it back on the map.
Sad.

PS: No one will stop me from getting Dungeon & Dragon Online, no one!

Well, Guild Wars is similiar to this. You can instantly create a max level PvP-only player with great equipment, so you can play without leveling. Still, the way the game works now, it's difficult to unlock abilities without starting a lvl1 player and going through the PvE game. However, since the max level is only 20, by the time you're about 60% of the way through the game, everyone's the same level, so skill determines about 80-90% of your success through the game.

To the OP:
I'd suggest you check out Guild Wars. The combat mechanics are similiar to WoW's (i.e. click on someone to select them and press buttons to use abilities), except there's hit detection (so tanks can actually form walls) and no jumping. However, it's much faster and the game is much more focused around combat instead of traveling (you can instantly travel to any town that you've already been to, at any time, anywhere), crafting (there are no tradeskills), or grinding (the way the game works, grinding will only give you a small advantage over others).

Combat (especially PvP) works more at the speed of an FPS game, instead of a Civ game. A popular build last month involved putting at least half your team as DD Aeromancers (basically giving half your team the NS upgrade Focus, and having them focusfire on a single target) to kill an enemy almost instantly. OTOH, it is possible to play more defensively and slow the game down with a spirit build (akin to turning everyone into HAs and having them duke it out until one team runs out of resources).

The spirit build was created as a way to shut down the Aeromancer build (since an Aeromancer runs out of mana really quickly and is almost useless after doing so). You can instantly create a max level character, with great equipment, who can use every skill that you've ever learned, on any character. The way the game works, there's a lot of strategy. You have to choose your build from a huge number of choices, to making it effective in a large number of situations, or make it so that you can manipulate the flow of combat to fit a very specific build. Then, you have to make it mesh well with the other 7 players on your team. Plus, there's a lot of tactics. You have to play effectively, knowing who to attack or heal, when to switch targets, what skills to use and when, and how to adapt to the enemy's builds.

Guild Wars's strengths are the exact opposite of WoW's weaknesses. Instead of just mashing buttons in the exact same order, guaranteeing a win if you have good gear, combat is very dynamic, based entirely on skill, strategy, and tactics, with very little emphasis on gear. However, Guild War's weaknesses are the exact opposite of WoW's strengths. It's not as immersive, the plot is weak, and there isn't enough PvE content to satisfy a player for more than ~80 hours.

Still, I love it.
