Can you clarify a couple of things for me. I was under the assumption you couldn't have double layers due to problems with selecting player sin commander mode. Isn't this affected by walk ways? What about the alien tunnels? Surely marines can fit in a cral spaces like that, vent sized or am i wrong?

btw the layout looks really nice

My biggest gripe with this layout is that the hives seem a bit too close together. I remember reading that an ideal layout is set in a sort of web pattern... not necessarily symetrical... But with the marine start as the center (figurative), with passageways spreading out in a web towards the hives. Don't think literally, like a spider web (that might work, actually)... think branches.

I could be wrong here, but this is at least what I gathered from the guidelines.

I noticed Merkabra's map plan has 2 hives very close together and a third not too far away. But i'm really in the dark with this, so if anyone, merka or relic/flayra could explain things that would help a lot

Yeah i agree about the hives, its far too easy for the marines to hit each of the hives as they progress naturally through the corridors.
I think the idea is to get the marine team guessing as to which corridor leads to the active hive, giving them more of a choice and the aliens more of a chance.

N@rby : That corridor joining the two hives in Merkabas map is a alien only passageway.
And yup marines can fit into vents if they can reach them (later on in the game they can get jetpacks to reach everything)
And yup again about the walkways (i think) if its a small catwalk or something like that and the commander still has access to the floor underneath then it should be ok.

Narby, I believe that the passagway directly connecting those two hives on merk's layout is only accessable by marines with jetpacks, and the aliens. I think he said that some weren't marked on the map...

And yes, they are quite close in physical map grid distance, but if you look closely, you will see that there is in fact quite a bit of walking required to get to one from the other.

I beleive Flayra has said that the marines should have to fall back aprox. half way back to the marine start before they can access the route to the next hive.

In that case my mistake, thanks for the info

I think you need two or more marine accessable entrances to each hive area.

ok, well, there were a few things i wasn't counting on, i had originally imagined that alien tunnels were sorta... alien only tunnels or something, so now that i know about that, i'll make some changes... also, i'll try for that web-tupe layout, but i'm not quite sure how to make it go like that... i've sorta got the way it is now stuck in my head... i'll sleep on it though... thanks for the input guys

Yeah, the hives are too close together.

Also, as for catwalks... If you're directly over a catwalk, you can't select the ground beneath it. But if you move left or right a bit, I think you might be able to. Not sure. But catwalks, as long as they're not in excess or really really large, should be fine... As far as I know.

If you want a more weblike look, just spread the hives out. Move the top one more to the right and the bottom one further down. Also, it looks like that bottom one is in a large, 2 room kind of room. That would leave it very vulnerable. Just, add some connecting hallways in that area, and put some more rooms on the upper right.
