Apple Taking A Step Backwards?

Some of you may know that apple will be releasing an Intel powered system coming up some time in the near future. I was thinking somthing along the lines of an Xeon, you know somthing 64 bits, but it looks like they will be running on a normal Pentium 4, which is in my oppinion a big step backwards from the current IBM G5 PPC CPU's that Apple is currently using.

They did get Windows XP running on it though.

    A better idea would to be make an OS X Tiger for x86...

    A much better idea is that...DOES NOT COMPUTE~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    AN APPLE PC RUNNING WINDOWS XP AND INTEL! TRAITORS! BLASPHEMERS!

    Oh yeah this all makes perfect sense...Apple using the aging P4 technology and running Windows on it's systems. I thought the point of buying an Apple was to do away with Microsoft? Guess not. Let's analyze Apple's recent product history.

    PowerBook = WIN
    iPod = WIN
    Tiger OS X = WIN
    P4 Apple = LOSE

    It's not history yet, Bacon - just a first look at the technology. You guys are missing the point here - it wasn't something that Apple / Intel was going to market for general users, it's more to prove a point that you can make this happen. If they do market this though, I can see a possible use for it - dual booting OS-X and Windows XP, without emulation.

    Edit: Now that I think of it though, a much more viable way would be to somehow make a version of Mac OS-X that works on x86 systems...

    Well the way I see it, they could have gone with AMD. If they wanted to experiment with the technology, then putting a 64-bit AMD core in the apple with a new 64-bit OS-X woul seem to work better, yes?

    Then they'd have to re-design the whole operating system to be compatible with the processor, and you'd have to use the 64-bit version of WindowsXP.

    Yeah, but intel has a very secure hold on almost every processor in the market. And AMD isn't doing poorly, just when all 3 consoles and now apples and most PCs use one brand chip..... o.O

    I do think it's an auful idea. They will get some more users out of simplicity of use, but they have broken their monopoly, so while it is better for some users, they will probably not be selling too many more macs, just more software.
