Homing missles are win. Purple beam is great for killing the numerous enemies in latter levels. Blue beam is so damn overpowered it's not even funny, but since it is a directed beam it is really only usefull on bosses (in my testing it killed the final boss about ten times faster than the purple beam).
Oh the memories, I remember playing this with friends a loooong time ago, when it first came out. I like the purple beams best, you can dodge and fire, blue is ok but you can't really dodge and hit the target you want at the same time.

The stage 5 boss firing patterns remind me a lot of that "sdmkun" game I saw linked here in the off-topic forums awhile back. [edit]And yes, the purple beam weapon is my preferred one. Sooo cheap <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Nice Tyrian/Raptor like game <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

If you remember, Apogee was the name of the company that put out a lot of shareware games like the first Duke Nukem games, Major Stryker, Raptor, and others.
Apogee later turned into 3DRealms. They've been around for awhile <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
On their main site, one of the latest newsposts is that they're releasing "Stargunner" as legal freeware. It seems to have been the <s>first ever</s> err, scratch that, I read wrong, <i>last</i> game they released under the company name "Apogee," and although it's not a sequel to either Major Stryker or Raptor, it is a similar scrolling-ship-shoots-stuff type of game. Might interest you.

This raiden game is awesome, the blue laser and homing missiles (For those hard to reach places) is a great combo.
Oh I played raidenx about a week ago, great game. Sucks once you lose your powerups at the end though, its like fighting a war with a bb gun <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

They made a few side scrollers for the SNES like these, instead of top down. They were great too. All this airplane stuff makes me want to play the new ace combat, which I never got to get past the first few levels because my sister had to hog the ps2 on her visatation <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Edit: If the purple beam is too weak for bosses, try dumbfire missiles. Major damage.
I shouldn't have played on easy. Completed the game without dying once.
