its a working progress
I dont know about the rest of you, but I enjoy playing NS matches. However, I suck and no clan would actually want me on their team, hehe.
So, I'm thinking of starting a small fun league where people can group up into teams of 6 and play each other.
There wont be prizes or anything fantastical, afterall this is all about having a fun time and not all about the winning.
This would primarily be for UK players (because the server is UK based) but if people don't mind playing with high pings then fair enough!
All I'm looking for at the moment is whether or not people like the idea.

But any ladder/ranking system would encourage to much competition and draw players who just play to win and to be no. 1
So, yeah, we need another ns.gather or something similar for the average ns player.
Maybe even some clans would arrise that find their way into serious competition.
Maybe so! The main objective is to have fun, so we don't really want people desperate to be number one. I'd like to make it available to people who would like to play competitively, while having lots of fun but haven't had the chance.
ns.gather is open for anyone
The reason typical drafts don't work (IMO) is then the best players all end up playing and it becomes clan with a bunch of pub bench-warmers..
A random draft would suit this the best.
Good luck with it.
This is just a way I thought of to bring people in the non-competitive NS community together and to have some fun while finding out what matches are like. If people make tactics then good for them! Afterall, NS is all about the tactics.

*snip* in a 6v6 fun scrim the objective is TO WIN, that is the sole purpose of the game, the means by which people would win in either circumstane is the same. People with attitude problems will have them regardless of what is going on, in a 6v6 game where the marines outclass the aliens do i fallback and let them get a hive up only for me to come back later with jetpacks and smash them just as easily? no! why? because its CRUEL.
A ranking system would just provide a bit of direction and fun to the ordeal, there is absolutely no way the ladder could be a hinderance as the objectives are the same.
I'm only looking for interest at the moment.
If you like to flame me just because we dont agree, pm me so that i can ignore your attack another time.
Sure the goal of a 6vs6 game is to win, but if you play for fun you don't care (much) how often you've lost and won.
Stats just motivate to get on top of them, but let's just ask all the interested people in this thread wether they would like to play with a stats-system.
SentrySteve stated well what happens to those who 'care' to much and I completly agree with him.
edit; Thanks, that was needed.
The point is, stats transform this "fun-league" just into another league for the average competitive player.
Players interested in fun-leagues don't take it that seriously with winning, but stats promote that. Tell me whats the purpose of stats including wins, loss and maybe score except of creating the top ranks.
2. Since you would like to see a stats system and I wouldn't, we disagree!
3. *be nice*
Edit: Since the thread's purpose is to collect interested people and their opinions, I stop derailing this thread now.
I've written enough to make my points clear to princess, I don't have to and want to persuade you, Ziggy.

That was the point I was attempting to make as well, and I think he's right.
I can't believe I'm about to offer something semi-constructive, and if this idea is actually liked I might just go puke. But since all you carebears like having fun so much how about your "stats" are actually based off your teams input. If some kind of a form could be filled out for every player that you played with (5 other guys) that would rate how good of a commander they were, how good their shot was, how well they lisented and helped out the team, how often they gorged / built hives, whatever - then I could see this idea working. But I think that if you use the standard "win / lose" ratios it will turn into a crappy version of CAL.
But then again doing that implies that there are no set teams - which brings us back to this being nothing more than #ns-pug with stats, but if there are teams then it could just become CAL jr.

Uh, then what happens when a team like Knife (for you euros) joins "for fun" and ultimately destroys your league?
The randomising of players into teams would solve the issue of 1 amazing clan coming and cleaning house while spoiling the fun aspect for other players.
I don't care about losing personally but if players werent randomised into teams a clan would come just to show off and eventually wreck it for everyone else due to the fact that clans tend to cry noob at noob players.
This is an opinion which may get flamed but its just an opinion.
You can see the full explaination Here but I'll try to explain it for those unwilling to read the full system.
Basically, you have a ranking that is used to determine who you are allowed to play with. The idea is that a level 5 player for example, doesn't have to try to play against a level 45 player. And a level 45 player doesn't have to play a level 5 player.
The way you raise your ranking is not through winning matches specifically, but by beating other players and gaining points towards your next level. And when you lose against someone, you lose points.
The amount of points you gain or lose is determined by the level difference between players.
The system does a good job of matching players up. If you're much better than those of your rank, you keep going up until you no longer are having such an easy time. If you keep losing becuase others are better than you, your rank will go down until you reach the point where you can win.
The system would have to be changed a little for Ns, but the core idea should work. The only problems with it are that it is possible to munipulate (but not in an undetectable way, if we had people regularly checking it there shouldn't be any problems. the only reason stat munipulation works at all in Halo 2 is that there are millions of players so detecting them is a little harder, to say the least), and the system is shaky when it has little information to work with, so there would probably be issues in it's early use, but as more matches are played they go away.
And if a fade keeps helping his team win, he'll go up in rank until he meets players that can beat him.
This system is designed, not to give newbies equal footing with vets, but instead to make sure newbies play newbies, regulars play regulars, pros play pros. Until they become good enough to move up.
It doesn't have the normal issues with a tiered system, where you go from being too good for one group, but not good enough to play well in the group above it.
And, becuase ideally all the players in a match would be about the same skill level, you won't get stacked teams. Games will be back and forth battles, instead of just one side trouncing the other.
Princess comes up with a good idea like this and everyone jumps on it listing 101 reasons why it won't work. Why can people not just offer help or advice? Having fun and playing to win are not two mutually exclusive exercises.
I think it’s a great idea, would love to take part with or without crazy ranking system.
Just random the teams, damn it.....
