for noobs..
Ok, so here is the dilema, i have seen one or two Animes on at odd times, eg late night TV, not dodgy hentai Anime, just things with a fixed good story. I must admit i like them, but because i never plan to watch em,(they just happen to be on as im chan hopping) i dont know their names, so i never get into them.

Well, so i have quite a bit of spare time for the next year (Gap year before University) and i just wanted to get started watching some great Anime. But where do i start???

This thread could also help many aspiring anime-o-philes to be, and can help jump start a lot of fans in an awsome genre (as if they arent aleady)

SO : What good shows are out there?
Should i get translated or subscript or hardcore Lang (obviously Japanese or chinese what were you thinking )
Are there any faves? WHat of this Naruto people talk about?
Any hints? Tips? Fansites?

All help is apreciated

Ah, where's Infinitum when you need him. I'd say you should start your venture watching Love Hina, shouldn't be too hard to just catch it on WinampTv.

Your diving in into the world of crazyness and strange non-logic.. might as well get a girl... no but seriously... you have to get it from episode1 till the end to get the story.

So... first.. don't go for Helsing.. THE vampire killing of some guys... and having no logic at all.. maybe I missed to many episodes.. but I swear I saw them all.

X.. ugh... the movie is just.. er sick. Don't really know what to say about that... just kinda makes me wanna go sleep. I'm told the series is better.. but never watched them.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. Some bad guys called "angels" coming for earth, but the good angels fighting them off... gets weird later on. Fun Anime.. still strange, especially the last 1/4.

Hacksign is good. It's a Virtual Reality MMORPG Anime.. pretty neat.

Thats all for now.. its 2 am and I'm tired.

I second Cowboy Bebop. It is simply one of the greatest things I've ever viewed.

Otherwise, I'd suggest you just check the review lists of a good anime site and look for a bit five-star content that seems to appeal to you.

agreed on cowboy bebop, it should be a mandatory watching.

Neon genisis Evangalion (sp?) - is good, especially if you like a good old fashion mindf***

dothack (and it many sequels)- I've heard are good have only seen a little of the first.

If you're starting out on anime, we want to start you off on the right track.

Movies:
Princess Mononoke
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Grave of the Fireflies
Vampire Hunter D

Series:
Azumanga Daioh
Fruits Basket
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Cowboy Bebop
Full Metal Alchemist
FLCL
Gunsmith Cats

Series?:
Samurai X Trust/Betrayal/Reflection

A lot of those can be found on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. They're edited/censored, but they're also cheap if you have cable. Some of them probably only come as a box set. I have yet to find Fruits Basket sold broken down, but it's a fantastic series, so I didn't mind shelling out for it. I classified the Samurai X as a "series," but it's more accurately a movie broken into several parts. You might know it as Rurouni Kenshin, but the Samurai X series is darker than the series they've shown on Cartoon Network.

Just avoid the pitfalls and you'll be fine.

You know I'm not even going to bother clicking on these anime topics anymore because there are never any links to free hentai.

Since I'm here I can tell you that I don't really like anime that involves the characters wearing clothing for longer then 4 minutes but I thoroughly enjoyed Cowboy Bebop, you can't go wrong with that show.

If you don't "get" Neon Genesis Evangelion though, don't wrack your mind trying to understand it. The more you do, the more you'll grow to hate the series and everything associated with it.

Since PvtBones cared to mention "mandatory watching," I don't know why he also mentioned 'Slayers' while he was at it. Over-the-top fantasy comedy with a choleric sorceress, a dumb-as-bricks swordsman who often takes a back seat to aforementioned sorceress but is good for a few surprises, a self-appointed defender of justice and practitioner of white magic (not to mention her pacifist father (who attacks his foes with devastating attacks such as the no-violence-kick and the all-men-are-brothers-crash)), a golem who was once human and wishes to become so again (or something like that), more-often-than-not ridiculous and/or pathetic villains, sometimes very cool and powerful villains... what did I forget? Oh right: Tons and tons of explosions, usually caused by the choleric sorceress' trademark spell, the 'dragon slave.' Add to that the great visual style and the absolute horrific voice actors and you have the very definition of mandatory watching.

Which brings me to another point that (to my immense surprise) nobody has yet brought up: Avoid dubs like the plague. If you don't speak japanese (and I doubt that you do), get subtitles. But dubs... Well, if you're lucky, the dubs will just be bad. If you're unlucky... Well, let's just say that psychiatric treatment is not cheap.
The japanese style of voice-acting is very different from the western style, and none of the western voice-actors seem to capture it very well. Add to that the truly excellent voice actors of 'Slayers' and even good western voice-actors would be hard-pressed to do a dub that would do the original justice.

slayers is a case of seen it and forgot I seened it, blame my brother.

I heard the dubbing for Cowboy bebop was actually decent, but it's best to get the subbed versions.

I guess you could just go look for whatever genres you like (sci-fi, horror, comedy, whatever) and then go from there, or you could just branch out and ask for a 'best of each' sort of deal.

My recs:

Samurai Champloo: Samurai and hip-hop. I don't know what else to tell you.

Cowboy Bebop: Sci-fi about a bunch of bounty hunters. Really stylish, same guys that did Samurai Champloo.

Macross Plus: 4 episodes (or movie) about two test fighter pilots competing for love (and air supremacy). Think of this as a futuristic Top Gun.

Ghost in the Shell "Stand Alone Complex" - TV series. Cyberpunk police action.

Rurouni Kenshin OAV: Not sure what it's called in the US ("Samurai X" I think?), it's a four-episode miniseries about a samurai assassin. Probably the most depressing thing I've ever seen, but beautifully done.

That's all I can think of for now. :x

Ghost In The Shell: Innocence

I find that to be easier to start on than the first movie, and less of an investment than the series. Although Stand Alone Complex is superb. It's like cyberpunk meets xfiles investigations

Hentai's not hard to find, if you know where to look. *cough*.

Aside from that, I highly recommend Full Metal Alchemist. Much awesomeness.

Oh, and on the subject of dubs vs subs: the case against dubs is that fairly often the dubs absolutely maim the characters and plot, or change the personality of the characters (I've seen once, with both subtitles and english dubs switched on, dialogue being added in where there wasn't any, changing the whole feel of the scene). In many cases with dubs the pattern of speech seems strained and contrived due to having to make the words fit where they aren't supposed to.

There are some examples of good English dubs (Neon Genesis Evangelion comes to mind), but in the main the original Japanese is far better. Put it this way: if they got it right the first time, if the voice actor was talented and fit the role well, what are the chances that they're going to be able to find someone else who can do it the same way in another language, and do it as well?

Besides, it's fun to see how much Japanese you can pick up from subtitles, not to mention starting to pick up nuances that aren't translated accurately.

Yeah, if you already have the internet, you have a good start... and a great finish.

I recommend Samurai Champloo aswell, having just finished the series, I'd have to say it's my favorite anime series. Also AKIRA if you enjoy fluid, and detailed animation; a feature not many animes have anymore.

More like disappointing. I was expecting some uber fight, seeing as there wasnt much during the whole series... and what do I get? NOTHIN. I still like the series... it just advertises itself as action though when there isn't really a lot...

I'm gonna suggest Ghost in the Shell : Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell : Innocence. Both are good animes that don't focus too much on humor. I'm not sure about what to say for the first movie though. I'd say you skip the first movie and just jump ship to SAC

Hayao Miyazaki creates some pretty good ones as well like Spirited Away. I've already watched Howl's Moving Castle, but it was a bit more lacking than the rest of his works. I still recommend his works to you though.

And if you want fad animes....well there's Naruto. Maybe I can throw Bleach in here as well =X

EDIT : And most of the anime Gainax makes are awesome as well. FLCL ftw! I can't say the same for Ebichu though

Wow! this thread grew so much, thanks for all the recomendations! Keep em coming.

Ok so i think im going to start with Ghost in the shell as it sounds the most mainstream, then go for some Cowboy Bebop. Hows that sound?

Is C B dubbed or with subtitles? How bout GiS?
What good Sci-Fi Anime is there apart from GiS?
How about the Animatrix? Any good?
Can anyone describe this Naruto and tell me if its good/bad?
Can anyone explain licensing or background workings of anime?

Escaflowne <-- kinda girl based, but with big mechs that fight in medieval times.
Cowboy Bebop <-- has to be the most decent one out there, action-based.
Trigun <-- lol its just funny because of the character, comedy I suppose.
