Alien only corridors

Blocking marines...
Im sure almost everyone has thought about this, but its something i surely would like to see in the maps, so ill just spit it out.

Why not cover alien-vents with alien-only doors? certainly if they are 'in' the infestation, this would be realistic. There would be a door (it could be an iris door) that opens up only when an alien comes next to it (with the use of a trigger_presence). This would block the marines from entering alien vents, and get back to the gameplay the vents were originally made for. (i just don't like marines unable to move in the alien corridors).

Now i know the game does not end with the destruction of the command station, all marines have to be dead, but i don't know if the game ends when all hives are destroyed (which would be logic, since the hivemind is gone). This would remove the problem for the game not ending because an AFK alien in the vents which has to be destroyed..

and, in ns_next (i believe) the vents have some areas in it which are a bit more open, with a ventilator above it. This is really good i think, because then aliens that move in opposite direction can move around each other. In most of the layouts i do not see this, and i think there is a problem if one alien has to go from hive 1 to 2 and the other from 2 to 1 in the same vent.

Im already using doors like this but I'd like to replace them with brushes that can only be entered by the alien team - this way the aliens can disapear into thier infection and the marines cant follow them, it solves the problem of having large passeges for the class 5 from hive to hive and preventing the marines from getting from one hive to the next too quickly.

Note the ventilator ares in NS_NEXT are also somewhere safe to cocoon into a new class. Until marines get jet packs of course...

What I'd like to do is make some iris doors in my vents, but the marines could lock the iris doors, IF they could get past a certain infested area. The aliens, not being able to operate machinery, wouldn't be able to unlock the doors, but the marines could lock and unlock the iris doors. The doors would be default open at the beginning of the map, but could be opened/closed only by the consoles controlling them. I don't suppose you boys could help with that? Also..I can't seem to get the iris doors to open like iris doors..they open like slide doors?

Thats a good idea Mu, I've been using something quite similar in ns_caged.

Its a nice idea, although the acctual use of a 'door' as such distracts from the organic feel of the aliens, if you can make the movement look less like a machine, or like Mu_ said, using something that can be just passed through.

And chrome, the marines can get into the ventilation without jetpacks, theres a place you can jump up. If its ment to be there for the clever marine to use then nice idea

i agree. and if it was a sprite it would look pretty cheezy. maybe a SLIGHTLY convex MODEL, so when u walk thru it would disappear gradually from the center, get it?
or maybe there should be a bunch of alien-door-models in different sizes. still this sux too cuz the light don't fall on models as it's does on brushes so it would look really bad too. sigh... i dunno!

Hum, If you used a brush the aliens can pass through you could make it really dense organic "webbing" and foliage on the inside and outside so it looks to the marines and aliens like thier really passing through something - dissapearing in to the thick hostile alien inviroment which yelds only to those it wishes to pass - cool

Yeah something like that would be nice, maybe three or four layers of the brush entity with a transparent texture that looked like lots of vines, making it so you can partially see into the duct but not a glaringy obvious hole.

I don't think it would be easy (or really, even possible) to make a brush that allows one player to go through it but not another. It's just not in the capabilities of the engine I don't believe.

Could you use a trigger_presence to open an invisible door?

but does trigger_presence work on a team specific basis?

I believe trigger presence does work on a team basis. You could easily cover the opening of a vent with alien muck and gunk, and then place an invisible door just behind it, openable only by aliens with the trigger presence brush. This is certainly a very cool idea, I must say.

OR, you could add that web stuff that Mu_ suggested and (here it comes) put a trigger_hurt-brush that only damages marines in the vent system. Like there was some kind of deadly gas coming from the hive goo in choosen places. This could be used in other situations too.

Is there a way to make trigger_hurt only kill one team?
Or, to flayra, could there be one?

It would be very boring for the newbies to explore stuff for the first time and find out that they die when they go through vents with scary alien stuff. And in other maps similar stuff is perfectly safe... And think about the costs paying to brin those dead soldiers in. :/

    I don't like trigger hurts.

Then I'm afraid the poor newbies would have to adapt to survive, Kassinger. Isn't that the basis of this game? "Natural Selection"?

In other words, I like the idea being thrown forth. I myself have fiddled with WorldCraft a teeny bit, so I have a vague understanding of what's going on in here. I do, however, understand the whole concept. I like it, since the aliens are defeated the moment all the hives are destroyed, as opposed to the Marines still being active even after their base is destroyed. This adds a certain balance factor I feel is essential.

    Excellent work, people.
