Natural Selection - My Games

<div class="IPBDescription">Reasons NOT to have this happen</div> I'm sure many people know of NS making its move to the My Games list soon, and are all very excited about it. I, however, am not. With the large number of new players coming in wondering what the hell NS is, there might be a lot of frustration with the more experienced players having to teach everyone every aspect of the game, because we all know how people love to read manuals for games. Sure there are the upsides, like more clans being born and adding new life to the CAL-NS scene, bigger communities, more servers, more servers with 50 level combat, and so on.
But I remember someone saying that 'the larger the community, the dumber it is' or something along those lines. I would have to agree with this statement.
Take a look at CS. There are 50,000+ people playing that game at any given time, with more hackers than you could imagine. The average CS player's age is probably 12-15. If you've ever played on a CS server today, you would know that there is a **** load of mic spam from pre-pubescent kids who have nothing better to do than sit at home all day headshotting people.
That same CS community would come into your NS server talking about how **** NS is and that CS owns all while they sit in a command chair and drop turrets everywhere or build OCs in the hive.
With that community would come the hackers. We don't have many hackers in NS, but I'm sure we wouldn't want any either. People who don't do so well or get killed every time they spawn would get raged and turn to something to counter that. Instead of improving themselves and getting better at the game, they turn to hacks. Hackers would terrorize every NS server (~100 give or take a few) and turn new or old players off to NS. People would be driven off to other games and stop playing NS or get hacks of their own. NS would be doomed to a community full of hackers or would just die off. Yeah, we can ban them from our servers but they'll just turn around and make their own servers to hack on.
Well, those are just my opinions, feel free to discuss or lock now. I'm sure there are a lot of things in there that people don't agree with or don't make sense.
I also hope that you caught the parts where I was being sarcastic.

Hackers? The only servers i play on have a very active admin group. Not too worried about them.
So i guess that all of the cs players will automatically know that you need 10 res to go gorge (not to mention they need to know what res is) that he sucks at killing stuff (which, by your standard, is all cs people like to do) and cost 10 res to drop OC chambers all over the place.
Mic spam? Mute. Its not like that anything new...
Oh, and everyone was new. Just because a new person comes from CS doesent mean he's an instant hacker or mic spammer (and yes, i did catch your "Sarcasm")
Oh, and if your trying to stop them from doing it, its already too late. There testing it right now.

Back than you got a "Hey thanks for saving me from that skulk" from a fellow marine when you picked a skulk off that was munching on him.
Today most ppl just **** like "Stupid killstealer go away you noob!"
It's like the ppl in a team are playing against each other for better k:d ratios instead for the whole team (that includes k:d ratios cuz some ppl have to die sometimes if they want to get something usefull done).
I don't think it can get any worse as it's right now. Most of those "elite" ppl stay at co_ servers that's something good for me (as i only play on ns_ only servers).
And about newbies trying to learn the game.. well it's not just you only notice the bad behaving ones, it's cuz the bad behaving ones are far more than the nice ppl who really listen to advices.
Can't count how many times someone just jumps into the cc and drops turrets all around base. Try to give those ppl advices like "Turrets won't help please do some upgrades!" They won't listen they will do it again and again. Normaly i just say "First learn the game than go for commander" but most new players just argue with stuff like "How can i learn commander if i'm not playing one?" and that's just wrong. You can say a million times "If you don't know the game well you're no use as commander" They won't listen anyway because they know everything better and can't stand it that there are ppl who play way longer and know more about the game.
Those kind of newbies really **** me off and sometimes take all the fun from ns away. Most times you can't even eject them as more than half the team is also newbie and think "Turrets are good at base" sometimes you can even get ejected for not building turrets at base but getting upgrades (happened quite a few times to me).
I think there should be something like a playtime counter to check if somebody can go comm/lerk/fade/onos. Like you need atleast 100 hours of playing ns before you can go comm. Or some sort of rating system where other ppl can rate a player and only ppl with good rates on behaivor and knowledge of game can go comm or morph to higher lifeforms. That would help greatly as ppl would be nice and really willing to learn to get a good rating.
'the larger the community, the dumber it is' <--- can be really true
Newbies can be taught. Just direct them to the manual or help them out. If you don't want to help them, you are hurting the NS community. Those that don't want to listen will be better one day. You just have to wait for it.
Hackers can be banned. If they start their own server, don't join the server. Simple enough?
to get rid of those mic spammers, mute them. every problem has a solution.
Personally, I think you are just afraid of change. By stating that there are massive disadvantages in being more popular, you are basically saying that no popular game can be successful. Then why would people want their game to be popular?
best. idea. ever. lol

Generalisation, Play on our CS servers and you wont find many mic spamming pre-pubescent kids you mention.
I also think most your problems can be overcome with good admins, which I feel we have over at Brys NS.
I would rather see Natural-selection take the risk of having the dumbest player base in the world in order to hopefully expand and teach a better community than to see the game's population dwindle and dissapear without action.
We could get a load of horrible players with a few well-intentioned recruits or we could get fresh players ripe for teaching with some idiots here and there. However, if we don't do anything, the player base will eventually fade. It might not be happening yet, but it always happens.
more players will be better.
you are trying to kill NS
and yes i am master of the obvious.
we want new players, even if they are from counterstrike. they will learn as we did.
But I remember someone saying that 'the larger the community, the dumber it is' or something along those lines. I would have to agree with this statement.

I had to change surprisingly little to make it a true statement for what happened during the initial 1.0 release.
Back then "My Games" didn't even exist.
What if exactly the same happened to NS? A lot of the older community members might be upset over changes, but the mod itself would grow very very popular.
Cpt probably is double-thinking the creation of this thread anyways, so if we're going to reply, please don't bash the author. Just let him know your opinion, and discuss. No bashing.
Cpt, I would like to just say something that's already been said. Yes, the new players can be taught. And there will be a period of unrest as we get use to the giant spur of new players and will probably be fed up with teaching people, but things like this heal with time.
But there are MANY, many good things that come with the addition of the My Games list.
Personally, ever since UWE started, they've become my favorite Game Designer. So I like to support them, and have already spread the game to a total of 19 of my friends. Mostly CS players, who now know, prefer and understand NS and now play it on an almost daily basis.
But my point is, since I'm a big fan of UWE, the more people that will play means more of a community increase as well. More people = More Constie donations, More communities starting up, more communities like NSR, RR, ModNS <u>growing</u>.
A bigger community means more support for our future games like NS:S as well. It also means pulling back veterans of NS so we again, and thats always good for numerous reasons. Heck, that very first investment into UWE might be some person who has money that actually heard of NS because of the My Games List. We don't know. But all in all, it's good.
There will be a small time which we have to actually teach people the game, because we've all dealt with it before, since the game is so different than CS. But think about how much of a better person and player it will make you, knowing you've helped someone enjoy a game as much as you.
I mean, is it like a secret society of retards that feels threatened by others of their kind? Seriously, they should be glad - dimwits that make threads like this might be less noticable if we pump up the influx of idiots, drowning out their dorky squeals in a sea of mindless droning and "NS is daing d00dz" threads.
Heres an idea : If you're afraid of meeting more people, even over the internet, just lock yourself in a basement. Oh wait, you probably already did.
@urinalcake:
As for no bashing the author, stop being apologetic for idiots. You're encouraging them, and they're not even listening to your attempts at rationalizing their behaviour.
please delete my posts except for the first one
see, in cs, the skills are all reflex really, i mean, sure tactical placement is good and well, but skillz/aimbot and presto win!
ns? you can land every bullet you fire, and fire every moment they are in your arc and not win. in cs rambo'ing can work reliably if you have the skills/hax, in ns? you need criminal hacks that are super obvious, anything short of that and you need teamwork.
so for this new wave to enjoy ns, they'll probably want to try and win, to win? they need to learn.
so for a while after my games listing? fading on pubs will be much easier <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
if 50k even download ns?
that aint bad, and with steam? hl1 followed by hl2? means people who got silver or collector edition hl2 who never really played hl1, or never really downloaded mods, the world will open up, their may even be a period of slight server over population if valve make a big announcement about it.
but fanbase and playerbase are what gives a developer immortality, look at bioware? i've never played jade empire, not even a demo, but after kotor, neverwinternights(or as i call it kotor beta) and baldurs gate (1+2)? i know that game will rock, its the one thing motivating me to buy xbox despite having a pc that spanks it, if that game ever does make it to pc (when xbox exclusivity wares off or whatever) then i'll be paying full price for it.
so, again, when Unownworlds release ns2 (the full game as such) out of expectation of greatness, and just to pay back for the frankly incredable hundreds of hours of costless gaming they gave me.
i also want them to stick around when they do this? (could they release over steam?) so if some of those 50k maybe downloaders actually buy the game out of the same thought, helping UW live? all the better.
First, just becuase its on my games doesnt mean all the cs players switch to ns(ricochet is on my games, look at all the people playing that)
Second, NS is NOT newb friendly, the people who you are so worried about littering the ns community will not stick with the game. The learning curve is TOO steep for people who just want to run around shooting stuff.
Third, hacks dont really do a lot in ns. Even if every single lmg bullet automatically hits an onos, it still doesnt do anything, there are no headshots and no awps. Plus the admins on ns servers are good(at least the ones i play on) and hackers will be banned in about 5 minutes from connecting.
anyways, if the community picks up some new people it wouldnt be a bad thing
Who cared how many kills/deaths you had? Its a team game! If you won you won!
Wait, they'll probably all want to play co. My bad.

The ns team really needs to bring back the full bright skins for marines and aliens too. The game was so much better with those.
best. idea. ever. lol <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yarr, i cant wait to see games, where to marines team has no comm, becuase noone meets the requirements or the players thta meet them dont want to go comm.
Back on topic:
No matter how immature you are, if you want to win you will listen to the more experienced players. Many new players just means, that we have to teach them the way of the stealthy skunk. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->
