Strange Ping Problem

<div class="IPBDescription">rar?</div> I've played NS for a long time. I have a very fast computer that runs even HL2 very smooth.

I havn't played NS for awhile. I was a veteran before it started getting handed out like candy <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I stopped playing during one of the 3.0 betas.

I just returned and installed 3.0

My ping is on average 8-21. However, when there are many players around, my ping starts to jump to 400-700. In other words, any time enemies start to rush in, or I go to attack the enemy base, my ping jumps to unplayable levels.

NOT FPS...but my PING is the problem. FPS stays perfect.

Ideas? It only happens to NS...and I never had this problem in earlier versions.

Tried using net_graph to work out if its choke or loss or something? Have you played with your rates to work out whats best for your connection?

I'll check the net graph. I noticed that SOME other people also get lag spikes during the same attacks.

My rate is currently 3500. What is a good rate for DSL/Cable?

Try raising it to around 20000 and I think you'll find its a lot better to play with. Also, check your cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate.
People's opinions vary a lot as to what values you should use for these. I use 60 and its fine for me. You should try playing with the numbers and see what feels best <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    You play on STEAM ?

You'll have to redefine your internet connection type. Set it to LAN/T1 (or something like that, the lowest parameter). I've seen this problem many times, STEAM just block to a certain ammount :/ (stupid thing.. really)

Huh... i'm certainly a noob in every HL thing ^^ what is cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate ?

I think I'm right in saying:

    - rate is the maximum data transfer rate (in bytes/s) you recieve from the server

    - cl_cmdrate is the number of packets per second you send to the server

    - cl_updaterate is the number of updates (or packets) per second you wish to recieve from server

These need to be set according to your particular connection AND according to the maxiumum values allowed by the server you are playing on.

I find that just playing around with the values will eventually allow you to find a setting that suits you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

You are correct about steam resetting to 56k.

I will play now and test it out.

Wish I could get back into playtesting, heh. I've been working as a developer on a JKA (Jedi Knight Academy) mod...but I sure wouldn't mind getting back into NS work from time to time.

and dang the website move for removing the # in my account name <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> It used to be #include.

That corrected the issue. Wasn't aware that steam decides to set your connection info. Thanks <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just to clear a few things up, the Steam service periodically tests your internet connection, and sets itself up accordingly. As you've had to manually set your connection speed, I suggest you check the setting every now and again.

    Thanks for the heads up.
