I'm pretty sure you don't need First Aid to heal people. First Aid just gives you 5 extra hp per medkit. Basically, any bum can't search a hospital/drug store for medkits for easy experience. Good for those who have a hard time fighting or getting passive experience: consumer, scout, and fireman, mainly.

Until the big Swarm O' Zombos sails over your suburb anyway.
Usually zombies go for the armory cause that's pretty much the root of the problem. You can get lots of ammunition and weapons there. The PDs and Malls are secondary compared to the Armory
Hospitals? Errr....why would zombies hang around there? Apart from medkits, which come up with that ever so unreliable Search Area button, they shouldn't have a reason to camp them.
TBH, the zombies should be busy hunting down the silly people who AFK outside buildings (and the Armories!) I managed to smack 2 people around with my zombie before they pulled into a building. There's one person near him as we speak, and technically, he ain't moving. Free XP! And of course, another body for the Horde >:-D
How does the Armory have more ammo? Does it come up more often on searches?
Also, even a PD with ten or more military/cops won't stop zombies, due to the semi-turn-based nature of the game. When everyone's logged out, unless they're coordinated enough to log out at different times, the zombies can easily get in and attack. Even if the military people kill the zombies afterwards or in the middle of the attack, the zombies will just get back up.
EDIT: Zombies might camp hospitals if they can open doors so they can start a never-ending war between healers and zombies. It will just be "bite bite bite heal heal heal bite bite bite..."
I think it's smart to go camp near a hospital. Usually, people go there for first aid kits, and usually that means that someone is hurt. The zombie just opens the door and tries to kill someone. Missed and died? No problem, just stand up using 1 AP and open that door, and go kill again.
Survivors have to search for first aid, which you'll have better chances killing the zombie instead of wasting turns trying to heal yourself.
I've got a book...and I've tried reading it several times, I'm thinking it's useless. Much like punching...or being a medic (pffft, how do i get exp without med-kits?).
Books are absolutely not worth it. Hell, they aren't even worth the 1 AP used to drop them. Medics have a pretty hard time. There is no solid way to get experience besides using the medkits, which aren't hard to find themselves. The problem lies in the fact that diagnose costs 150 XP for them.
EDIT: To BadKarma - I was just glancing at the UD forums; apparently, Fort Creedy (Peppardville, where Mr Manta is) has pretty much been overrun by a pack of zombies who looked at the survivors' plans on the forums. The fort is shaped like a C with the armory in the center of the C.

6888 dead and rising.
Now about 10-12 hours later, it says:
15562 dead and rising.
I don't know about you, but that number scares me... a lot. I really hope that's the number of players, not the number of zombies...
