I don't know if you can really count Descent as part of the progression of first person shooters. ...I hope they don't throw in that extra 'zing!' they do with all game movies.
Well since the movie isn't titled "Doom III," I think it's fine that they use the original Doom plot. They WERE derelict space marines, stationed on Mars, teleported on one of the moons after some garbled transmissions.
After that's it's pretty much wide open. Though I have to say, it would have been much more stylish a movie to having a more subdued character do a one man show. Start in the dark with only a pistol, and work his way to the end. That hasn't been done quite as often. No corny one liners or anything, cold steel faced, ya know. I think it could be done.
The original DooM plot was that you assualted a CO because you didn't like his order, got sent to a mars base, and then get catapulted into a situation where you have to fight demonic beings from another time and space because of some sort of teleportation test that's going on between Mars and it's moons...
Pretty much. I still have the original Doom here and I could fire it up to check.

We have a misunderstanding, I didn't say 'Goldeneye' was the first FPS invented. I said some of you people remind me of those kids that thought it was, and all they seem to care about is graphics. What happened to the good old days when game play was better than graphics....sigh.
Well, here is the <a href='http://www.doomworld.com/10years/doomcomic/' target='_blank'>Doom Comic</a> if anyone wants to read it. Actually hilarious, it's pretty obscene.
They should use the original Doom story, you hear screams inside the building, then you enter alone with just a pistol...by yourself. Doom I took place on The Mars Moons, then onto Hell itself. Doom II was hell on Earth...
