Sound Crackling...

Since a few weeks ago, whenever I'm loading a website or anything my sound will crackle a bit, usually winamp, but it can be anything else. I've changed various hardware acceleration options, but no result. It's also happening in Psi-Ops FMV's now that I got around to trying it out.

Any ideas why this would just start up recently? It's bloody well annoying. I use onboard audio, AC97. Yeah. Shut up.

I was going to answer your question and solve your problem for you in what could only be described as glorious flash of brilliant blue light, but then you told me to shut up.

And you clearly didn't heed my advice. Shut up.

Sounds like your line in/aux (I can't remember which or even if it's a different one :/) volume got turned up, and you're hearing the data noise. Open the volume control panel and try lowering the different volume levels. (The ones that aren't Playback.) See which one makes the crackling quieter, then turn that one all the way down.

The thing is, it's not constant crackling. It's really only when I'm getting HD activity, or heavily CPU intensive stuff, but it only started recently. I've toyed with my audio settings.

Same problem. I even thought it was a sound card so i bought a new one. And then I bought new speakers. Still happens occassionally.

CForrest, I tried turning my Line In down to 0 (even though it was MUTE anyway) and if this does the trick I will love you for a year.

I have the same thing on some programs, I've even installed custom creative drivers. Didn't help at all.. but the drivers are much better.

Check the IRQ on your sound card, also make sure your soundcard is seated properly (littlest nudge can make everything go batshit on you if you're not careful.). Uh, check the hard-drive, make sure the IDE cables are attached to that firmly.

That's all I can think of.

I believe you might want to switch your sound rendering to hardware/software depending your computer, and make sure direct sound is turned on all the way.

IRQs make absolutely no difference, in the end. They're only there for legacy hardware and software, I believe.

I get something like this, sorta. Except it's a dull hum rather than a crackle, and it happens when I move the mouse (as in, while the cursor is in motion I can hear the humming noise). It only seems to happen with Firefox and occasionally Morrowind (go figure).
