Crash On Startup
So yeah, topic name says it all. I did download the demo and had the same problem, but I had gotten the demo through a torrent and just figured it was corrupt or something. But now that I have actually the full game im still running into the same problem. Thanks in advance for the help.

It has something to do with the resolution not being supported, so you need to go into one of the config files, and change it. I forget which one though.

Thats the one.
Long story short: unless your card is newer than around an fx5600, you're boned.
You can play SP, but bf2 is mostly about MP. If you bought the game I would say to return it or uppgrade the gfx card.
About being forced to desktop without error, it's an refreshrate error. Try to set refreshrate to 60 hz, however that didn't work for me. I DLed the latest Catalyst drivers and cleaned from old drivers before installing them, this solved it but since you got nvidia I dunno.

Fools? It's not DICE's fault that you're using ancient technology. There's nobody to blame but yourself if you haven't upgraded your video card.
Besides, if you had gone with ATI, you could use an 8500 to run BF2.
Sure, it ain't DICE's fault that I hadn't upgraded yet (I have since). However it is DICE's fault that they made the decision to alienate a big chunk of their playerbase over something as stupid as shaders. Perhaps I'd be a little more forgiving if they had made some effort to make the engine scaleable

It's DICE's fault for making the game incompatible with older hardware though. Why not include an option to turn the shaders off or use older versions?

I agree that they should've supprted the GF4s, but come on - you can buy a 9600 Pro for 100 bucks on newegg and get a huge performance boost over any Gforce 4. There does come a time when newer equipent is required for a game.
[edit] and my BF2 is working again... probably went offline becuase of the folks at EA had to reset the altered accounts.

It was probably too much trouble. It'd be like trying to get Battlefield 1942 running on an old Voodoo card. Shaders are an important part of the visuals.
Then maybe you could explain why the game looks like ****.
I am extremely unimpressed with the grapics in BF2. For what the game requires, the graphics are horrible. I have a 9800 Pro, 2.7 ghz, 1 gb of ram.
Gameplay wise, I love the game - but it takes a rediuclous amount of resources and does not have any cutting-edge anything.
They were dumb for making only the newest video cards to be able to run it. Some casual gamers will buy the game, realize they need a new card, go out and blow $150+ dollars - install the game and wonder why they just didnt go buy a PS2.
Maybe because it's actively rendering a huge area with potentially dozens of vehicles, planes, choppers, and lots of infantry all at once, and trying to do that with ZOMG-CUTTING-EDGEZORS graphics would make everyone's framrates so poor as to be unplayable?
I picked up an AMD 64 3000+ and an Asus K8V-X the other day. Runs like a dream, and it only cost me about CAD$300.
I never go below 40-60 FPS in BF2 with these specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ @ 1600 MHz FSB
Asus K8V-X mobo
1024 MB DDR 266 MHz (2*512 MB)
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128 MB
Creative SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit
And these settings:
Display mode: 1024*768*32
Terrain: Medium
Effects: Medium
Geometry: Medium
Texture: Medium
Lighting: Medium
Dynamic Shadows: Off
Dynamic Lights: Off
Antialiasing: Off
Texture Filtering: Low (This is actually Anisotropic Filtering. Low is no AF, medium is 2x AF and high is 4x AF)
Audio Renderer: Software
Sound Quality: Medium
Enable EAX: No
English VO Only: Yes (Save a bit of RAM)
If it's rendering the entire battlefield at the same time, that's a problem. If it's rendering dozens of vehicles and aircraft at once, then I'm willing to bet that plenty of them are far away enough to be rendered at lower levels of detail, which often render fractions of the polygons that the full model requires.
Though, you're right... you shouldn't really expect anything "cutting edge." After all, the graphics on full settings look pretty darn fine. I don't care if it's bleeding edge, as long as it looks nice.
However, I EXPECT the game to run smoothly at a decent resolution (1024*768*32) on the low settings, considering that I meet all of the system requirements. The game doesn't run smoothly for me: I suffer through loading pauses and jerky graphics, and since the most graphically intensive times are the most action-intensive times, this is horribly inconvinient while flying. It's very, very awkward to have to explain to your former Black Hawk crew that the only reason you crashed after going through a brilliant flag-grabbing spree is because of a graphics snag, especially after you thought that you had all the kinks worked out and that you would be fine.

People on the low end of the system requirements spectrum are meant to stick to the 16-player servers. Have you tried playing on 16-player servers?
Also, anyone else think that it's really weird that I get better performance running in 1024*768 than I do by running in 800*600?
I appreciate keeping the topic alive but it's not the point. This card I run now works super smooth on Doom 3, City Of Heroes, Half Life 2, all easily with 40 fps on high graphics settings. It is a workstation so its made to handle alot... Could it be a driver thing?

A high-end configuration:

This is on a P4 2.6Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, x850XT with 5.7 Catalyst Drivers. When actually playing, I simply turn off all AF to get a decent frame rate, which is at 16x in the screenshot.
I've got an X800 Pro VIVO, Athlon 64 FX-53, and 1024MB of RAM. So, I expect the game to run perfectly at 1024x768 with 4x AA, like Half-Life 2 or Doom 3, but no Dice. The framerate is OK, but I get some other kind of chop, almost like really bad lag, only it happens randomly while my ping is constant. I've died more than a few times thanks to this. Also, my aimpoint/ironsights will sometimes be replaced by a huge black box that completely obstructs the screen. Sometimes it takes up the entire screen (when I'm using a sniper scope). Then the ground will start losing textures, which I've found to be advantageous on large maps but also quite annoying. Then, usually, my weapons will lose their textures and become a graphite-shade of reflective chrome. A short time after any of this happens either the game will simply freeze for a minute and crash to desktop, I'll get a black screen but still have sound then crash to desktop, or I'll get a weird distorted picture then crash to desktop.
Settings:
All high, 4x AA.
God I hate EA.
You mean DICE, right?

Set this to your desktop resolution and all should be rosy.
There is a default <Profile> and usually one other named "0001".
This worked for me and a friend.

Overall I'm very impressed with the game; I was never a fan of the original or BF:V, but this game is really something else. It's almost my favorite MP game now.
If you see TerranGrunt, that's me. I usually play medic, but I'll also go anti-tank if there are too many APCs about. My favorite maps are Strike at Karkand because of the focus on infantry combat (and also I kick all kinds of **** in close quarters) and the Daquing Oil Fields because of an awesome game I played on it yesterday - I was almost run over by a tank, but I managed to hide from it by running around the oil tank for a bit and capping enemy footsoldiers. Right when it was about to get me, an F-15 or some such flew over and took it out, just like in the end of Saving Private Ryan.
I have one question; how do I unlock the L85A1? I'm tired of facing full-auto MECs with a burst rifle. I've already gotten the Basic Medic Combat medal and I got promoted to the first rank.
You need to get promoted to the second rank. After that, every rank unlocks a gun IIRC. To unlock the gun, you have to log out and back on. A little dialogue will pop up and ask you what gun you want next.
Oh and the L85A1s kick **** on semi-auto. ^_^
I'm going to go for the anti-tank unlock next; apperantly I'm a huge pain in the enemy's collective rear when I break out the rocket launcher.
