Where Did All The Servers Go?

months ago, there were between 500-900 ns servers, and within the past month or two, i have seen 200 or less.
is it just me not able to see a large portion of servers, or are people dropping their ns servers for other mods?
also it seems that the amount of players on at any given time is dropping also.

At the time of this post there are 381 active servers.
A few months ago, I remember it being greater and all. But not between 500-900. Highest this year I think was like 450 something.
It could be because of any lack of updates or announcements.. but my best guess would be the gap between the CAL season change.
Other than that, no clue.
How this compares to past figures, I do not know.
most of the time i used to get 400-500.
and at this time i can still only see around 147 servers, even with all filters off.

You need a different server browser then - one is mentioned above. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I assume it has to do with the recent hl1 server query protocol update.

These changes bring the HL1 engine's querying protocol in line with that of the Source engine. If you connect to Steam enabled game servers using a third party tool, you may need to contact the vendor for an update.
Added a challenge number to A2S_PLAYER and A2S_RULES server queries.
Setting "sv_enableoldqueries" to 1 (currently the default) allows old style (no challenge/response) queries to work
Changed A2S_INFO server query to require the string "Source Engine Query" appended to the end of the query packet
Removed support for "info", "infostring", "details", "players" and "rules" queries, use A2S_INFO, A2S_PLAYERS and A2S_RULES instead<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Another reason the NSSB excels. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
OHGOD THE NS FORUMS ARE KILLING NS

HLGuard is pretty horrible. Someone from FFT was banned from a server for having "aimbot". <i>FFT</i>! I was also banned from a server... this was before I had mouse acceleration disabled, so naturally my aim was horrible, and it still detected "hacks".

Man Depot, you never stop pimping that web-based server browser! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> Not to sound rude or anything but the site is really slow, and last time i checked you couldnt join any game server from that site so it's pretty useless. The only interesting feature is it shows the % of game servers running "x" plugin, and that's only for information purpose. And to scare me when i see all those servers running extralevels.
While it's a good initiative and all, imo nothing can beat something like ASE with <i>good</i> filters settings. They updated the HL1 server query protocol btw.
On topic, i ping 436 servers with no filters as i type this.
This goes down to 78 servers when i filter out servers;
- currently running siege maps
- currently running combat
- blocking scripts
- requiring "cheating-death"
And this goes down to 59 servers worldwide when i also filter out servers running any extralevels version...
That's 26 "decent" servers where i have an acceptable ping (<100 (europe)), most of em empty, or running bots, and 3 of em are passworded.
So yeah, i reg on 2-3 servers and that's about it.

It may be a little slow if you're stateside, as it's hosted in Germany. I've not had any issues with speed though. And it's a server <i>browser</i>, and has been noted as such, so you're not meant to join servers from it. It also provides a lot more information than you've noted, so perhaps you're not totally familiar with it's features (you'll forgive me for not going in depth, again, on all it does).
Last I checked there were 51 combat servers NOT running extralevels2, and a total of 406 ns servers running.
Servers running any plugin are now marked with a gear and the plugins-page now displays the amount of servers running each plugin.
I also readded the player-statistics for each server back in (which have to be fixed though).
Things to be done:
- Add search-engine
- Fix statistics
- Fix timers
- Add rules-page
- Add <i>real</i> maps-page
- Apply design for plugins, statistics and maps
- <i>Want me to add anything? Just tell me!</i>
