Screen Becomes Ridiculously Darker

<div class="IPBDescription">...when running ns</div> When I start ns, everything is just fine - gamma is right...etc. But, when i switch to another window use alt+tab and do some other stuff, or some stuff pop up during play(eg. web page pop-ups, AIM, msn messager alerts), the screen will be darkened by a lot. I really dont know what cause this so i must come here to ask for help.

system specs:
ati radeon 9600 xt
kingston 256mb ram x2
2.8G Hz intel cpu
some random brand hard drives

any help will be appreciated, tahnks.

    Wow, alot of people with complaints for ATI based graphics cards lately, specifically the 9600.

    Might be an incombatibility issue.

    ATI's not my field.

    I have always had problems with NS and ATI cards. I had the same problem you're having with the 9600 and now with the 9700 if I alt tab the entire screen goes pitch black and I have to ctrl+alt+del to close HL.

    My solution : don't alt tab <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
