Yay, first post for me! Okay, now that I finally got all of the registering out of the way (which was quite a task mind you, took a few minutes and a couple of trips to sharkys forums, interestingly enough), I'm here to help!

Kay, now I'm not quite sure exactly what your problem is, but I'm guessing it's just that you want to know a way to play your (completely legal, I'm sure) mp3's! Now this might hinder your ability to hear ingame, and I guess that's okay because it's in the name of ROCK!

So I guess you have a few choices. Or maybe just one choice, with a few sub-options:

First, you need winamp. Winamp 2x actually, because they nuked plugins with winamp3. You will use this to play your mp3's!
Next, you will need some plug-ins for said winamp. And here's the choice.

You can choose to get a plug-in that sets up keyboard bindings regardless of current on-screen programs. This is not too bad an idea - fast and easy access to play controls, but the downside is you can only change your playlist before, after, or inbetween each game if you alt-tab and pray to your maker HL doesn't crash. I do not know the names of any plugins like this, but I have been assured they exist. I assume that anyone with some basic keyboarding skills can head over to winamp.com and find one in the winamp2.x plugin archive.

The other choice, which is more HARDCORE, is that you can get Sneaky-amp. Sneaky-amp is basically a key-catcher of sorts, it monitors keyboard input for certain commands you specify, and then it makes winamp act accordingly. This is a really handy plugin that works in ANY application, and I use it for every game that I play, and even out of game, when I'm just way too lazy to click on the winamp tray icon and use the menus.

If you are still confused on how it works, I just type: winamp play hybrid rainbow; and then sneaky amp recognizes from the word 'winamp' I'm talking to it, and if it finds another command after that it will know I'm REALLY talking to it. Anyway, this command plays Hybrid Rainbow, by my favorite Jrock band, the Pillows.

The last option I guess, is to find some sort of integrated script for winamp in HL, or that one HL mp3 player that came out with the Opera. However, Half-life doesn't have mp3 decoding technology built into it, so you really can't use the ingame engine to play them.

If I totally misinturpreted your problem there, then it's probably a soundcard issue or something, and you might want to elaborate.

I'll be crushed that I wrote all that though, oh well... Hope it helped.

The NS has its own built in randomized MP3 player, go to your NS folder, click music, cut or copy and paste the music you want there!

ok, thanks. i got it to work just fine now.

i renamed all my custom music in the music folder in the following way:

ns_ambience1
ns_ambience2
ns_ambience3
ns_ambience4
etc...

and it works, too! only thing is is that the music only plays about 4 times for each song, and it only starts at the begining of a game.

YES. The Pillows are one of the best bands ever, period
And as for solutions for winamp: if you have the computer to do it, run HL in windowed mode. That's what I do. You can alt-tab out instantly, without losing sound or resolution or anything of the sort. Alt-tab back in just as fast. And the window even keeps updating when not in focus (but doesn't stay forced on top). It runs a bit slower (I guess), and the NS gamma stuff messes with the gamma for the rest of the screen (while it's open), but it's still a LOT easier to alt-tab and do stuff. I just click on winamp to change it
(oh, and for winamp 2.x, you can get joystick control plugins. If you have a spare joystick connected/laying around, you can have THAT control winamp. It's handy)

Go to winamp.com and download winamp3. Go to this winamp component page and download and install it. Then right click on winamp and, go to windows > Linus.info Hotkeys component and follow the instructions to it up.

I use my numpad to control winamp because I don't use numpad ingame, but you can customize it to whatever.
