Battlefield 2 Unlock Recommendations?

I finally managed to get BF2 working on my ATI card. Looks like junk, but at least now I won't get graphical corruption out the wazoo followed by computer crashes.

I've managed to earn my first pair of unlocks, and haven't picked them yet. Based on which classes I've enjoyed playing the most, and what I've read online about the usefulness of weapons, I've narrowed down the 14 choices to about half a dozen I think I'd like most:


medic L85A1 (and subsequent G36E)
support pkm (and subsequent MG36)
antitank DAO-12 shotgun (subsequent p90 has reputation for being not worth it)
engineer MK3A1 jackhammer shotgun (subsequent mp7 has bad rep like p90)

Any recommendations and reasoning of which 2 to pick first? And if I pick one, does my 2nd unlock credit for this promotion <i>have</i> to be used on the next tier weapon in the same playerclass?

    The DAO 12 is pretty good fun and makes a good replacement for the crappy Anti-Tank default gun.

    The L85A1 is also a good choice, but I didn't unlock it because I rock with the other medic gun <!--emo&:D--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I'm liking the G3 (assault) too. As for unlocks, as far as I can remember you get to chose any gun but I don't remember well because its been so long since I got a new unlock <!--emo&:p--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The best thing to do, is join a server, see who's got which gun and follow them. When they die, pick up their kit and have a play around, see what you like <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The P90 is awesome, and easily worth working towards. MP7 is as well, I'd actually directly contradict any stories those two aren't any good.

    The PKM is currently imba, frankly. It was 'tweaked' to be more accurate, but somehow became so accurate on the pronedive that you can effectively snipe with it. By all means, use it, but don't be surprised when it gets nerfed again.

    The G36E is probably my favourite Assault Rifle. Two bursts (it doesn't have a full auto setting) will drop basically anyone, and the added bonus is, Wheee, you're a Medic, so you can heal yourself. The L85A1 is quite good, but bear in mind that while it has a scope and decent damage, it's actually one of the least accurate Assault Rifles in the game, apart from firing the G3 full auto.

    Marik, shout me on XFire, I play quite a bit, join the playZen lads on TS and you can follow us around. Between us, we have every Unlock, so you can just get us to do a few Suicides so you can play with them. <!--emo&:)--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Just avoid unlocking the sniper's weapon.. it completly suck...

    I suggest you unlock your shed, throw bf2 into it, lock it again and throw away the key.

    For the record, the ranked server paradigm of bf2 really annoys me and anyone else involved in running a gaming community. Hopefully some good bf2 mods will attract players away from the ranked servers. ( check out usi.jarhedz.com for one example )

    I've spent so few hours in BF2 I can count them on both hands, and most of that was spent with my video card as my main opponent instead of anyone online, so I'm curious about this...is there something that different between ranked server play & players vs. in unranked servers?

    You can only earn unlocks on ranked servers, and you can only run a rank server if you rent from an EA designated GSP. The smaller homegrown gaming communities are forced to run an empty unranked server or rent a ranked server from a competitor even if they have capacity to run servers themselves.

    ...ouch. I knew EA was a big fan of getting money, but ouch. What ever happened to enforcing a serverside config to keep settings even across a competitive environment?

    My favourite unlock was the sniper rifle, though obviously because I enjoyed the sniper the most.

    [Hint: Fire one shot at a grunt with the locked rifle, then without moving your mouse, switch to pistol and fire one shot. Instant frag, with the added beauty that the killing shot is silenced so you don't have to constantly move about]

    From your choice, i'd go for the anti-tank shotgun. It's the best gun for CCQ, IMO.

    All of the Sniper rifles outside of the SVD do the exact same damage, sherpa....

    Got promoted again and have 4 as-of-yet-unused choices for unlocks now, with a long way to go for the next promotion & unlock pair.

    I've tried to get basic medals in each playerclass to get a feel for how different they are. So far I don't have a favorite.

    I'll just concentrate more on finding good, headset/mic-using squads instead of powergaming as if it was a singleplayer RPG <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I played anti-tank almost exclusivly, but I never bothered using any unlocks for that kits weapons. I found the submachineguns to be some of the best all round weapons in the game. And after trying both unlocks, from dead kits, I feel I made a good choice.

    I find the G3, G36C and L85A2 will all perform better on semi automatic, but only the G36C will keep decent accuracy on fully automatic.

    As far as sniper rifles go, dunno, never fired one. My only use of the kit has been fumblin on the ground, looking for a medic's kit so I can heal myself, and so totals about 15 seconds of my global time of about 100 hours, has been with sniper kit >_>. Thats due to my personal opinion on the weaponry of <u>that</u> kit, especially now, with the magical 20 foot range claymore mines! They will even detonate on a roof top, as you run past underneath now ><.

    I went ahead and unlocked the L85A1, the PKM, and the DAO-12. The DAO-12 is better in CQB than I ever expected it to be, the PKM seems a little better but I'll have to try it more, and the L85A1 I didn't even try yet because I was so busy enjoying my other 2 new toys <!--emo&:p--><img src='style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I still left 1 unlock to choose for later.

    The mk3a1(I think) Jackhammer, is 4x the shotgun dao-12 is, you'll love it, smaller clip, faster fire rate and more damage.
