yes, thats what i would like to know...

how do i get the best visual experience for ns
i dont want to use custom models, im mainly interested in the console-commands you can use to improve graphics

i can remember there was a high-definition ns-texture pack, which really rocked.
anybody knows why it is not around any more or why it doesnt work anymore? consistency maybe?

yeah, maybe you can help me a bit.
there is no problem finding information or configs the other way around(high gamma etc)

ty for your help

"i dont want to use custom models"

    "i can remember there was a high-definition ns-texture pack"

    O_o

in any case, enforced consistency on every @#@ server pretty much killed customization for a while. Now I don't see it turned on as much though (of course, there are a lot fewer active servers so that may be part of it).

Most of the commands you can put in console won't do much for visual quality with default NS. Just crank the resolution, turn on the AA and AF in your graphics card control panel, and adjust lighting to proper levels.

Yea, kill gamma hacks, force AA and AF on, bump up the resolution and put vsync on.

Bear in mind this mod is based on a game based on an engine that must surely be celebrating its 10th birthday soon?

I've heard some rumours about getting banned via VAC while using HDR enhancement packs. This has nothing to do with NS directly, but I'd be very cautious with replacing models etc. You may risk getting banned from Steam... just my 2c

i dont want different MODELS, i want the original ones...

if there was a high-definition version of all of the models in the game i would gladly use it
but i honestly doubt any such project exists

what do you guys do to help out with graphics quality? only the aforementioned "hardware"-tweaks?

gl_max_size 512 <-- this makes the engine resize textures to 512x512, the default is 256x256. Not all textures are drawn in 512x512 though, but for the ones that are, you will notice a detail difference. Also if you want a high definition pack, it does class as custom models. You should take a look around nsarmslab for custom models, I think they still got some high def stuff on there such as the pistol and lmg.

You can't get VAC'd for using custom models...
I think the "HDR enhancement pack" that you're talking about is a custom opengl32 dll that adds in a bloom effect:
    <a href="http://www.madabouthats.org/projects/cgshader" target="_blank">http://www.madabouthats.org/projects/cgshader</a>
Now that could get you VAC'd

edit: looking at that cgshader site, the author recently added a warning that using it online will get you banned

mp_decals 4096 can add some neatness. it doesnt make things look better, but it allows a max of 4096 wall decals, such as blood splatter and bulletholes.

    gl_texturemode "LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
(or is it r_texturemode? can't remember).

    what does that do?
  • CoolCookieCooksCoolCookieCooks Pretty Girl Join Date: 2003-05-18 Member: 16446Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor, Constellation
it improves the look of textures from far away, you know when you see vertical/horizontal streaks where the distance barrier changes? I think it removes/improves that iirc.
  • DarkFrostDarkFrost Join Date: 2003-04-03 Member: 15154Members, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
    Yea, it turns on better texture filtering <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

The full list I believe is

    GL_NEAREST - Worst
    GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_NEAREST - default?
    GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_NEAREST - bi-linear
    GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR - tri-linear

I'm not sure if GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR works.

why does picmip screw up the xhair and the minimap? it should only screw up the textures...
  • surprisesurprise Join Date: 2003-01-16 Member: 12382Members, Constellation
    because both are sprites? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/confused-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="???" border="0" alt="confused-fix.gif" />

aeh, i have no clue... im a nub
