I never went to E3 before, but I do watch the shows on gamespot/etc. E3 sounded pretty much like waiting in a 3 hour line to test a video game, then watch a gameshow that can be watched from gamespot, then wait 3 more hours for a video game, etc.
I'm not saying E3 it self is pointless, but it seems pointless to actually go to E3. Since you're not missing much, everyone takes videos/etc and posts them on sites, thus you're able to see what's going on.
So you're just missing out on waiting 3 hours in the lines really... and meeting Cindy Synnett in person.
so they're actually trying to return it to "journalists ask developers about new games" type conference instead of letting it spiral downwards into a "sweaty teenager with a blog oogles boothbabes" type conference

I also vote 'Good'. The complaint I already have heard many times before is just that the event feels too stuffed, and you can't get a real idea of the games there.
The gaming industry has been moving more and more towards a 'maximum hype, minimum creativity' level that I don't like. E3, with all its flashy booths each trying to outdo the next, fit right into that world. I for one hope this is just a sign of more to come. I'd hate to see the game industry go the way of movies, with nothing but the biggest movies with the most expensive explosions and the least story making their way to general consumption. Even though we're getting close to that already.
We should be getting our news through websites, and forums, and smaller locations filtered all across the web. Not blasted through a neon cannon right into our faces. Gaming is still a young industry, and so it still has the ability to adapt much more quickly than the old behemoths of media like movies, tv, or print. I'd hate to see it keep trying to ape the massive hype methods that other media use to get attention. It only draws attention to the loudest products that have been dipped in the deepest pool of cash. And most often, those are the most creatively and intellectually void products that the system puts out.
