If the idea of a planet with a star behind it is picked up, I'd love for that image, or at least that idea (something unknown around the horizon) to be used promotionally (even if only very subtly at times) for a few or more of the next titles where it fits.
My first thought was for somewhere in a promo movie, however long or short, for NS2. I realize the game plot could go in a million directions, but it doesn't seem too far-fetched for a promo trailer to start in space, with eerie music and a slow camera, only to see, say, a frozen alien carcass float past slowly. As the camera keeps moving, we see a planet in the distance, with the light just on the other side of the horizon. We could later find the light to be anything. A star, a battle, a weapon of some kind.
To give you an idea of what I mean by "subtly", you could use the same imagery during any promo that places a camera anywhere in space. The image could be off to the side, having nothing to do with the subject of the camera, significant only to those savvy enough to notice it. Hell, it doesn't even have to be in space. You could show two recruits shootin' the hay while they wait in line to sign up, and the imagery could be on the back of a book the guy is carrying at his side.
.... sosumi if I'm not the most creative guy in the room, but you get the idea! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Anyway, it's just an idea. I really like that image on the right, and -- again, if it's picked up at all -- its "cool factor" would only gain depth, I think, if we saw some representation of it, even if it was abstract at times, scattered throughout UWE promotional materials moving forward.

This reminded me of the whole "letters in space, camera pointing to stars & space, then pan to planet with Interesting Object #1" introduction to many Star Wars movies and videogames. It was a very unifying intro, yet the different pan directions, different colors/climates of planets, and different "interesting object(s)" allowed for enough variation to stay fresh.
Time to squander away another perfectly good hour daydreaming of ways to make an equally good theme for NS intros... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" />
Changelog (if such a thing can exist for an image):
- Messed with tones/shades on NS button - New galaxy button - More Stars! - Free HMGs (just please go to your damn waypoint!)
Hope this satiates the masses until RoyGBiv blows it out of the water <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I think you should remove the planet, it's too much in focus. I think it would look better with a constalation of stars as a question mark it would fit in better and place the focus back on the games.

After seeing all of them, I have to agree with Solitario.
Both logo's on the left and right of the banner (well technicly the planet isn't a logo yet) make my eyes go from left to right. Keeping the main focus on the middle of the logo (the current games). It does however pull me more to the right then the left, but isn't that the main idea. A "What's next?" kind of thing? I like the idea of the sun (or insert random bright object here) is peeking arround the planet
I do agree that the stars arround the planet need to be dimmed or even completely removed in the immediate vacinity of the planet. Who said that!
It stands to reason that a brighter object, in this case the planet will outshine objects which are much further away and seem smaller. Ah well my 2ct on the subject <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Personally I think Roy's aced this but anyway here's how I'd set it out (ignore text etc, best I could do at 2am <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )
I just updated the site nav bar. I liked pieces of so many of your entries but none of them seemed quite right for us. So I ended up making the image mostly from scratch anyways.
I used the planet though and the ghostly star theme made it into the question mark behind the NS2 logo, so thanks for that. You guys rock!

wow that looks excellent
I've been reading the comments for the last couple days, and decided to have a (probably not so) final go at the logo:

Changelog (if such a thing can exist for an image):

Hope this satiates the masses until RoyGBiv blows it out of the water <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
