<div class="IPBDescription">The threads return!</div>My PC is hanging every few seconds. IE: Im typing and suddenly text stops showing up for a few seconds, then everything catches up and continues. The problem is while things like games may hang, or IRC, sound does not. Music will play, or if a video is playing and hangs, the sound with it continues normally. Reboots did nothing to help.
I first made sure I had enough ram free (2 total, 1.5 free), enough CPU power, nothing was eating up the CPU, cleaning out startup, checked processes running, nothing unusual.
Next I ran scans on all hardware, Ram, CPU, MB, HDD, etc. All passed. To be safe I disconnected my 2ndary drive, nothing changed.
Then 2 spyware and 2 virus scans, again, all clean.
I then noticed in safe mode, the hanging was not happening, it ran smoothly, which seemed (to me) to confirm it was a software problem. On a suggestion I first updated, then clean reinstalled my video drivers (since sound was not being affected). Didn't work, and even when I had no special video drivers installed (just windows default), it still was hanging.
No CD's of floppies in the drives that it might be checking, and the only thing I've installed recently was the ES beta (testing, not out at the time of this post).
So, um, am I missing anything or is it time to reinstall windows?

As weird as that sounds, I cannot input my password on the User Login Screen if my iPod Mini is connected.
I click the white box to input the password and everything just freezes.
I have to restart the machine and quickly disconnect the iPod. Once the password is in and I'm on the desktop, I can plug the iPod back in things are normal.
I'm thinking it's your graphics card somehow, since Safe mode fixed it; try swapping it out for a friend's card to see if that fixes it. Otherwise I'd check the cables from the card to the monitor and the seating of the card in the slot.

Are these freezes always the entire display freezing (ie, not just certain windows)?
A thought occurs: see if it still happens on a different monitor (if you've got one). It probably won't help, but it doesn't hurt to eliminate possibilities.
Idea of another way to narrow down the list of possible software causes: create a new user account on the machine (or several, with different account types like administrator, power user, user, etc.) and see which accounts stutter.

Tried making admin -> limited accounts and all experienced the same problem.

Maybe compare the list of processes running while in safe mode with those in normal mode, and terminate the difference? Maybe it's a stray process that's usually innocuous but is misbehaving?

After a lot of playing, it seems just certain windows hang. Ill hit 'enter' in IRC, and IRC will hang displaying the text I typed into the channel, as well as other text, but I can still move my mouse around and go into Firefox or such without any delay. New monitor didn't fix.
Now Im really stumped.
<_<
Dont tell me you didnt see that response comming. Usually, if a problem is this tricky, it will take less time to just reformat your comp and get it back in working order, than figuring out the problem.
I have the exact same problems with my GF6600GT, my PC will freeze within a random amount of time during either 2D or 3D, I have tried a full reinstall of windows, different drivers, heck I replaced the gfx card with a new one, still does it :/ .
Sometimes it works well for days, sometimes it happens a few times in a row.
I'm running Ubuntu Linux now in dualboot, haven't had the problem since..
