Iron Grip: The Oppression is out

Anyone tried this? I heard it's rather laggy unless you get a good server. Sounds like, oh, just about every other Source multiplayer mod. How <i>odd</i>. This is basically Natural Selection plus Communists, except the marines aren't people, they're AI, and the aliens aren't aliens, they're people with guns, and there are also tanks. But no buildings.

    I tried this yesterday and to be blatantly honest I don't think the concept works. Beyond being riddled with bugs the gameplay itself feels awkward. The problem is that there's really only one person having fun in this game and that's the oppression commander guy. Fighting Source-bots is just "meh". I really like the idea of the resistance being composed of unique characters, but because the game is set in this almost co-op style the objectives should be far more epic.

    The map that I most played is a large outdoors setting that doesn't fit the gameplay at all. It's trying to be a sort of Battlefield 1942 which is clearly not one of its strengths. The urban setting seems far more appropriate but I didn't have a chance to play it much.

    This game needs a lot more development for sure, I'll come back to it in a few months but I'll admit I don't see much potential.

    I'll break it down for you.

    Natural Selection = 2 teams, 1 with marines led by a commander and one with aliens.
    Add in Communists.
    Make all the marines controlled by AI led by the commander instead of by people.
    Change the aliens into people and give them guns.
    Take out the buildings and replace them with tanks.

    Ta-da! Also you have to add lots of bugs and lag.

    Basically, have one player playing an RTS. Have the others play an FPS.

    And have the person playing an RTS, go against the players playing an FPS?

    I thought the mod was really boring.

    Maybe I'll check it out again in 2 years. Hopefully the iron grip team will have figured out how to make it fun by then.
