Have any of you guys heard of the cats that are genetically engineered to be nonalergenic?
They cost like four to five thousand dollars, and there is such a demand for them that some people have been paying 2 to 3 thousand more to get one.
Apparently they don't have a gene or sumat that makes the allergic reaction happen in people because of the hair/dander...

My dad told me about this after reading a story on it, I'm going to try and find and article in print that I can link to

I read about this as well, they haven't been genetically engineered just selectively bred.

I'm a cat person purely because they are low mainenance pets. Dogs are too much like hard work plus they arn't as intelligent as cats.

Dog's are just as good if not better in problem solving as cats and are easier to train. The ones geneticly closer to wild canine (wolves/hyenas/jackels) and hunting dogs are probably the smarter ones. They inherited pack strategies to take down huge prey they normally couldn't take down by them selves. There are only two wild cats which on rare occasion do this. Lions and Cheeta's. I give you the fact though that some dog species are pretty low on IQ <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />, but there are some very smart species out there

Cats are however lower maintanance, that's true. Single people with full time jobs should not get a dog IMO. Since a dog is a social animal and needs a pack (in this case a leader/boss) to be happy. If you are single and work a lot the dog will feel lonely.

Basicly what it comes down to is:
Do you want a social animal by nature, which needs care since it's not allowed to hunt in human society and needs good leadership (the dominant ones especially) dogs FTW

If you want a pet which kind of takes care of itself and is also pretty solitair, cats FTW. Due to this fact you're not really able to create a true bond with a cat though, but can be affectionate from time to time (when it wants to)

People usually try to humanate (word?) their pets. I say a dog is a dog, a cat is a cat and not a human, so treat it like a dog/cat. An animal is much happier if you treat it like it would be treated in the wild by it's own species. It's way to tempting humanate, since it looks cute and the frantic behavior makes it look like the pet is happy. But it's simply not good for the animal it's psychological development. This is more aimed towards dogs though, an animal displaying this kind of behavior is usually very stressed...

Anyway, German shepherds FTW. And I mean the real German shepard. Not the ones from outside of Europe, which are bred to have shorter hind legs or descending backs so they look "nicer". Most of the times resulting in weak hip joints <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I really don't understand it why people would screw arround with a dog it's health like that <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="mad-fix.gif" />

yeah the German sheperds in the USA, and pretty much all I've seen in California get full blow osteoperosis in like 4-5 years. They stopped using them as police dogs because of the bad hips.

Selective breeding is the oldest form of genetic engineering, very little of what we regularly eat now adays is anything like it's wild form. They've (both plants and animals) been bred togather from the sources with the highest yeild, best health, and often shortest maturation time.

This leads to some... issues with the animals often. Especially in strains designed for their aestetic properties rather than any real use, although the limited genepool used in bringing out the desired traits is always an issue.

Kouji: For the word: Laymen's is Humanize, official is Anthropomorphize. (Anthropo being latin for human IIRC... fairly obvious from there...)
