I have Win XP home, yes home, not professional and yes I know its not as good as professional bla bla ba...

Anyhoo.

I have SP1 installed and as you may know microsoft will stop making updates for it by the end of the month.

I heard many a horror story about people who installed SP2 and stuff stopped working. Anything from minor applications to games, chat programs etc too even getting windows to run. These stories came from PC savy people as well, not just some random person who had an isolated incident.

I also heard that it kills your ram usage.
Which is important to me since I only have 512 of it to begin with.

In fact the IT department at the college i went too chose not to update the colleges computers with SP2 when it first came out. I dont know if they have by now or not.

Now thats its been out for a while. Does anyone have any info on SP2? I just got an ipod which requires SP2 and since microsoft is stopping updates for SP1 i was thinking of getting SP2. But Im a little nervous considering all the crap Ive heard about SP2 and what might happen if I install it.

Maybe Im just Im just misinformed but I figured Id ask here in the very least.

-Thanks

You are informed, if you were talking the few weeks after SP2's release, like you said. Now, it's as good as it gets for Microsoft, nothing too terrible <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

May as well get it for the updates as well, kinda need 'em.

IMO SP2 is way, way better than SP1 ever was. The only application that's ever had a problem was our old version of a PHP IDE that I hated anyway, so that was a great excuse to get Dreamweaver, which I hate slightly less.

    Go for it.

I had no problems with SP2. I think the horror stories have been sorted out by now.

I waited a good year before installing sp2. And never had a problem since.

owkay... SP2 is stable on most pc's now, true (also on mine) But tell it to the people with the Intel Conroe processors. SP2 is buggy as hell on those machines, mate of mine has rolled back to sp1 until they fix sp2. Mainly because some of his mounted drives, all of his sata dvd/cdroms didn't work and the all of the proposed "fixes" from MS and support forums don't fix it...

    So if you've got a new cpu like conroe, don't go sp2. Anyone else can go sp2 <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I got SP2 after 2-3 months so MS had a chance to sort the issues that occured out. It's been working great ever since. (even though I hate the security center).

You can turn off all the alerts of the Security Center so that it isn't noticeable, so it isn't really a problem.

You can disable notification balloons altogether as well. I've always found them annoying.
