General Server Questions
Hey all,
I have some general questions about servers.
1. Windows or Lunix and why?
2. How can I give access to administrators without giving them access to the full box
3. What kind of hardware is recommended for a good box under $1000
4. Based on the answer on question 3, how many player slots can be run off that box given that the box will be hosted on a DS3 line.
5. What kind of server config tweaks/plugins are available to make the server run more efficient.
6. Any other helpful comments or suggestions.
Thanks guys I really appreciate answers.

Depends on whether you know Windows well enough to secure it and/or have access to a hardware firewalling platform. Additionally, Linux has (for familiarity reasons) a much steeper learning curve than say, Win Server 2k3.

Depends on O/S. SFTP is a good start, with a decent auto restart script/tool.

This changes weekly. However, as a rule of thumb, if it comes down to 'toys' or RAM, go for RAM.

According to my Cisco stuff, North America rates a DS3 as 44Mbps. That's a fair whack of bandwidth, you'd be surprised (unlike gamers, sysops know that users don't use half as much as they think they use.) how much you can fit in there. That said...
1. Latency is more important.
2. What presentation are you going to be given? Is it going to be Ethernet? If not, have you budgeted for the hardware (and do you have the skills?) to convert it to a format you can plug into your distribution switches? Basically, have you put any thought yet into network architecture.

Doing 4 properly before you start. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

You're welcome. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> I skipped 6 though.
