Out of curiosity ill be making a forum community soon, and was wondering what forum software everyone prefers over another?

such as phpbb
Vbulliten
Invisionboard ect?

I heard phpbb had a poopton of security issues so id like to hear from everyone what would be the best forum to use, to do this.

i hate phpbb and vbulletin with every fiber of my being
ipb would be passable if it wasn't so damn expensive
<a href="http://www.simplemachines.org/" target="_blank">simplemachine</a> is good for most things
    <a href="http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/web/wakaba_kareha.html" target="_blank">Wakaba and Kareha</a> will work for all your BBS/imageboard needs

I heard simple machines has a lot of security holes as well. ( which is a shame because I like the ACP and other things. )

I've never heard of wakaba or kareha and im taking it since if never seen a forum use those, the community isnt that high with support, mods ect, but ill check them out.

I've actually heard that Invision or VB were the most secure forums with less security holes than any other, but yeah ill check those last two out. Anyone else?

    Two more interesting options: <a href="http://getvanilla.com/" target="_blank">Vanilla</a> and <a href="http://bbpress.org/" target="_blank">bbPress</a>. I've heard good things about both.

Spring for the IPB, but make sure you get v2.2 - it'll be the most secure forums available.

ACP is a breeze too, once you find you're way around. And there's TONS of cool mods for it.

From a purely user standpoint, I prefer using IPB many times more than any other, with vbulletin a distance second.

i've seen a few mods, unfortunately most aren't public. the software's just a few pl and html files so it's not that hard to mod.
for support, i help maintain it. i also talk to the guy who wrote it almost every day.

I've been using IPB for the past four years, and highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

As for the expense, it's negligible if you also go with hosting with IPS Hosting - it's included in the price. I've had my private forums hosted by them since 2002 and have never had a problem. For $15/mo, you get 400mb storage, 25gb/mo transfer, 2 MySQL databases, 5 subdomains, etc., and the IPB license plus all upgrades is included as long as you're paying for hosting.

Chances are you'd be in the market for hosting as well, why not just combine the two? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I also love IPB. I have adminned several sites over the past decade and have run everything from bravenet forums, through vbullitin and personally written forum software too. But nothing quite touches IPB for the scalability. You want something for your forum, you can get it through IPB.
The support is good, skinning potential is excellent and easy too. I love it.

As a forum user I really like Vbulliten, as an admin sometimes the way things are organized in the control panel can be a pain to work with. For a free option I like phpbb, lacks some of the functionality of some other boards but there are loads of mods you can install to change that. (I've only used v2 tho)
