Distress Beacon (BACON) in NS2

<div class="IPBDescription">because no1 likes to spawn in a bunch of OCs</div>In NS currently the distress beacon sends people back to marine start...so if someone relocates, the team just lost a huge defensive advantage.

For NS2, maybe it would be possible to calculate the area around an obs while it charges up the distress beacon and create valid spawn points for payers (so they dont spawn in walls, other players).

However, this would create a cheap strategy if not limited. Imagine comm drops an obs to a ninja marine near a hive. Builds it, does a beacon, whole marine team instantly transported no matter where they are to the hive.
To prevent this, maybe the obs would only allow a beacon if there was a comm chair and an ip or something nearby so you cant just beacon anywhere in the map without building a few other things. Or maybe its an upgrade if you want "target" the distress beacon to your location instead of marine start. So each time you move, if you wanna have distress beacon call ot where you are, you build an obs in the base and do the upgrade and the distress beacon "re-targets" to your location.

    Perhaps it would phase marines to a selected completed command chair? hardly see a situation where a marine team has two cc's but its an option to keep open. perhaps the obs would beacon the team to the cc nearest the actual obs. that way the marines cant build an obs in the hive and cheese away, and they still get to beacon to their (new) main base.

    Why not just link the obs to the command chair like the ip's are? That way the only way you can do an beacon rush into the middle of a hive, is if you set up a command chair first (which as we all know take forever to build D: ) making the advantage much less??

    Linking the obs to the command chair would made the " emmergency beacon " impossible ; if you can not drop an obs anywhere on the map ( near a marine, randomly chosen ) to beacon and save your base from an ugly fade, the rush will be easier ^^ " shoot the obs " " then the pg ".

    IIRC this was one of the things you were supposed to consider when relocating, since beacon always called in the reinforcemnts to the "last know" good location (ie MS).

    this is why there could be a "target" upgrade-- where the last known location of the MS is updated to the current one. You build an obs, and hit the upgrade, the marine HQ or whatever targets its distress beacon to the location of the obs that did the update.

    If people want long games to go on like in 2.0, relocations must be more reliable. Plus its always a bummer for one skulk to be in your relocated base chomping at phase gates, then IPs, then you jump out of comm chair to shoot him and he kills you....camps IPs etc etc no fun.

    The other bug to work out is making sure marines don't strategically spawn on the other side of a wall.

    In addition, beaconing to an alien-controlled marine start can be quite effective. Everyone throws hand grenades and then fires off their weapons to kill all the alien structures. You quickly kill the alien rt, build your own, and move on. The aliens lose a lot more than the marines, as long as there are enough medpacks to kill the oc's before they kill you. This isn't a "base under attack, we need to save it" move though, just a random strategical move that I have seen work well.

    I would like to think that with all the possiblities that will be available for NS2 that with beaconing the marines would spawn near the comm chair, I would hope that it can be coded in, since beaconing in what will be the old NS was restricted to the marines spawn area. Alot of things that couldn't have been done before should become viable options. I'd say either to the comm chair or a uninfested area of a map.

    how about the OBS has a random chance of either spawn the marines at marine spawn, the beacon itself or a random place on the map.

    not a good idea imo. I think the target obs is a good idea where you upgrade the obs in your base (has to be near a CC + some IPS) to be the new spawn point.

    I think the idea is to have the marines beacon to the commm chair and ip's not the pre-designated marine start...............which is a good idea, no more laming of spawns.

    It will unbalance terrible the game. Marines have Phase Gate that can move marines wherever you want. Making possible beaconing everwhere will make impossible stop a hive rush if they beaconing near it. The idea will be good when aliens can drop hives at any room.

    If you require a CC + IP to use this upgrade to beacon to where the current obs is, then it isn't really open to much abuse. If the marines were going to hive rush after building a CC + IP in the region, the could easily build multiple IP's there, forget the obs or pg, add an armory for shotguns, and the hive should have been dead about 3 minutes earlier if aliens are that inattentive.

    beacon serves a very good purpose even if you relocate it, and even if the marine start has a few oc's in it.

    Why would you want to go back to a place that was already lost to the aliens as in the m,arine start? If that's the case then let the aliens use movement chambers to go to a either empty hive or where a hive was lost because it is basically the same thing, the ONLY reason why marines would beacon back to the marine start was because it had more to do why the physics of the game engine than anything else. It had limitations and that was one of them. The beacon should only be to the comm chair that is active................period.
