<div class="IPBDescription">A brief history, and some thoughts on the future</div>Check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac" target="_blank">this youtube</a>: an 18 minute documentary about the Amen Break (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amen_break" target="_blank">wikipedia entry</a>) and its use in underground electronic music over the years. This will be interesting to anyone who is curious about the origins of Hip-Hop, Drum and Bass and some styles of experimental music. It might also be of interest to those who oppose the current trend of increased protection of copyrights to the detriment of public creativity.

Informative and intelligent. It's amazing how drawn we are to the familiar over the new, to the point that a slightly modified 6 second clip could become such a huge part of pop culture. And I never really noticed it until now.

Nifty find, Puzl. I'd been wondering where that loop had come from for a while now, but didn't know what to search for, without a name. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> Definitely an interesting article, and extremely pointed about exactly how much current-day copyright slaphappiness is harming our growth and progression as a society on a whole.

I just got an album, "Hello Everywhere", by Squarepusher. A few songs on it seem to have a drum-beat that resembles the Amen. "Rotate Electrolye" and "Planetarium" if anybody want to look them up.

    Not a bad album, really.

A bit of Bernard Purdie wouldn't go amiss either...

It's funny because it's a really dull, annoying break.

The "Amen Break" phenomenon is also featured and explained on the frontpage of Ishkur's guide to Electronic Music. Definately worth a visit for those interested in the history and timeline of all the different styles. Lots of music samples too. It's awesome.

Indeed, I was under the impression that people who threw around genre names like "Darkwave," "Terrorcore," "Deep house", "Acid House", etc. were just trying to look like experts. Now I know that yes, most of them are just trying to look like that--but the names they're throwing around aren't completely made up.

I also chuckled at the descriptions of east coast/west coast rap's progression over time.
