Some toughts to make long epic war, or just more fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
make a somethink like this on the picture (attachment).
Green - aliens, blue - marines, red - currently fighting square.
Aliens attack first, then marines, and so on (or victory team attack)... until one race control all squares.
This fight can take as long as many squares there will be. 5x5 squares can take few hours, 10x10 may take much longer...
On each round players vote what square to attack, and then fingt on this square.
Development of new technologies may have have longest time (hours), and technology once developed will stay. Also aliens may need to wait some time (hours) to have more chambers/life forms.
Fighted squares may by always reseted at begin, or:
Squares first fighted may be empty, squares fighted another time may have some stuff left.
Fighting may also loke like this: each alien have 100res (or as many as needed for balance), marines may have full ready team too with ha/jp and wapons and some resources and partialy build base. What each time have may also depend on who attack.
There may be a special control points, when a team take control on this special point - this team can have special bonuses when fighting on other squares (bonus resources, main area computer on theyr side, robots factory, ...), can attack square of the map heving special bonus, can take control of some surrounding squares without fighting, or anything what developers want.
Squares can be a normal maps, or can be special designed little maps, or just special designed maps should be desinged only for special control points squares.
each team should have more bonuses depending on how many near squares are controled by them on a
currently fighting square. In situation on attached picture aliens have bouns=1, marines bonus=3 (or 7 - depending on how we want to calculate it).
Bouns is a whatever developer thing of... (bonus resources, reinforcements, more fire power, ...)
Aliens may have a special square - a square where they begin infestation, wchich will have some special bonuses, like a very hard to kill hives, all hives at the beggining,... and when this square is taken by marines - aliens lost no matter this is last aliens square or not. Marines may have special bonuses attacking this square too.
Marines may have that special square too - wchich will be any square - but the last they own ath the whole map. They may have a special bonuses - like some special reinforcements.
This all may depends also on that are aliens begin infestation, or marines come there to get area back.
There may be some NS servers connected, and fighting can take place on many squares at a time...
Squares dont have to look like 5x5 box. They may look like a ship, moon, space station, anything...
I wasted anought time to thing of this idea and wrote it, so this is up to you to simplify this, conver it, or just go further...

at battlefield 1942 there was a similar project that actually worked. Battles took place at battlefield maps but the players, resources (like tanks) and flags were depending on how many resources the "commanders" wanted to spend. This was combined with a world map an the possiblity to deploy and move resources around.
I think this system could work for ns2 if the developers would keep it in mind during the creation. The question is of course if players would be willing to play such a gamemode
