<div class="IPBDescription">Anyone Play This?</div>So Red Orchestra is having a <a href="http://storefront.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=fw_RedOrchestra" target="_blank">Four Day free weekend thing</a> on Steam next Thursday-Sunday. I've owned RO since it came out (I preordered it) and it's pretty freaking awesome. It's very realistic, so if you're into Rainbow 6 or Ghost Recon or stuff like that it will be right up our alley. The bolt action rifles are awesome and nothing compares to sitting in a trench with a machinegun watching artillery fall down on those silly people trying to attack you. Anyone in the NS community play this game?

I'm going to give it a try, I've heard good things about it. What's the gameplay like? How does it compare to DoD or BF1942, for instance?

Played and loved it since the 1.0 beta on UT2K4, never was able to afford it when it went retail though.

It's nothing like DoD or Bf1942. Red Orchestra is a realistic game like Rainbow 6 or Ghost Recon or Operation Flashpoint. Of course, it's set in World War 2, so there are a lot less automatic weapons and stuff, but that's the basic idea. There's lots of leaning, crouching, iron sights, going prone, grenades, suppressing fire, and long-distance shots. You never run headfirst into the enemy shooting all the while; usually you run from cover to cover taking shots when you can.

One thing the game DOES get right is how useless tanks are in urban (or indeed anything but open field) fighting. Zero visibility and short range fighting means that you never know when someone with a shoulder-fired antitank weapon is sneaking up on you to blow you to smithereens.

But eh, realism schmealism. It's only COMPARATIVELY realistic. And in several cases, the "realism" actually detracts from the fun, rather than add to it. Such as with locational damage and falling. Two metres down into a trench will snap your legs in twain like matchsticks.

And it's got that whole "first come, first serve" going that means that you never get to play the fun classes if you're not the first one to load the map.

Nah, you can fall into trenches without dying. And the locational damage is nice; if you shoot someone in the leg they aren't going to be able to run away from you, and if you nail their hands they drop their weapon.

When I played during the last free weekend I found it surprisingly easy to kill people. Perhaps it's just my love of 'realism' but I was very succesful with the PPSh, just slowly moving forward and peppering people with bullets when they came into sight. Ironsights are just so much more reliable than lame CS crosshairs. The bolt-action rifle fire-bolt-fire-bolt clicking is cool too. I also like how it doesn't tell you the exact number of rounds you have...

Plus classes aren't necessarily that important, you can always just pick up some weapon lying around. The different weapons based on the year of the battle taking place is cool as well (as is having to pick up individual clips of ammo if you've picked up a new gun or dropped them) - although it can be a little annoying to pick up ~10 stripper clips lying all over. If you have Steam you might as well take advantage of the free weekend. If I manage to finish my 3 college papers for this week I know I will (too poor and too busy to buy the full game though, heh).

They changed it; you don't have to pick up individual clips now, you just pick up the satchel that the clips are stored in. Plus you might have had an easy time because the free weekend means tons of people who have never played before are in the game.

Tried it during there first free trial thing; didn't like it at all.

Maps were too big; and the vehicle battles sucked. Tried playing on some of the smaller maps; but it was hard to find servers populated with them. And the trying them out with the bots sucked; mainly because the bots sucked hardcore.

I didn't say falling two metres killed you, I said falling two metres snaps your legs like brittle twigs. Unless they fixed that.

I might still play it, but I'm at a LAN party that weekend and the download is too big anyway.

It doesn't snap your legs to fall two meters. The falling distance that you can survive without any damage is a lot shorter than most games, but there really aren't a lot of drops on any of the maps.

What about the Reichstag map? There's a trench a little in front of the Reichstag. The sides of that trench are a little higher than soldier. Jumping into it causes legs to go breaky-breaky.

If you're talking about ro_konigsplatz, then I dunno because I've never broken my legs on that map. Otherwise, you probably played a custom map or something, and who knows what kind of crazy leg breaking maneuvers you can pull on those things.

I don't remember breaking my legs in that map (I only played it for about 3 hours last time, since I discovered it at the very end of the trial period), I did break them jumping off a wall in one of the Russian maps though (where the axis start in some train yard-ish thing). You should really only break your leg if you're jumping from like 10 feet+ (I mean, even then, it's easy to negate it, depending on your weight and how you fall)...but this isn't really the thread to argue RO mechanics. I didn't really notice it that much, anyway.

If it's anything like RO for UT2004, it rocks.

I've got it but my uni hasn't got the ports open for it so I can only see a limted no. of servers.

I never did like it. If you plan on making a realistic game, have some limits. What purpose does getting the gun shot out of your hand serve? While I'm sure the way it sounds is great "Dude, it's so realistic you can get your gun shot out of your hand! Like totally!", it still is only an annoyance. Loose your gun? Pick it up. Oh wait, you're dead. Could've just skipped to the "You're dead" part straight away. While I hear it has been fixed, what purpose did picking up every clip serve?

There is no strategic element involved, and anyone who claims otherwise is a filthy liar. It's exactly like dod, except less co ordinated and more realistic.

All the inconsistencies in realism and lack of real co ordination only create for a very shallow experience. The first few games were great, with the explosions and tanks and all, but after a few rounds it became apparent the mechanics aren't there to create a tactical shooter, but more of a fragfest.

Last one didn't snare enough people.

    - or -

Last one snared many people and they want to snare MORE people.

I've played it and my rig couldn't handle the graphics. But still, it was fun while it lasted. If I ever get a new PC I'm very tempted to buy it.

They're having another free weekend because they've added lots of content to the game since the last one. Getting your gun shot out of your hand is awesome; I've scrambeled frantically to find my rifle after a guy on the other side of the ruined building got a lucky shot, all the while hoping he wouldn't decide to charge me. It's not like DoD or CS or something where if you get your gun shot out of your hand they would just shoot you again and you'd die: in RO you're always in cover or something. Most likely if you lose your gun, it was because you exposed a tiny bit of yourself to take a shot at the same time they did, and they got a hit.

Hmm, that's pretty extreme. The hitboxes must be pretty butchered if that happens regularly. I'm talking about shooting the gun out of someones hands.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
It doesn't happen regularly. It has happened to me three times since the game came out, and that's after hours of play.

There seem to be some bugs in this version, specifically annoying to me are the ones connected with picking up things:

    1. When I have my 'crosshairs' pointed at something to pick it up it will just inherently ignore the 'pick up F-1 Grenade' text it's showing me, and exchange my rifle for the SMG lying on the ground...

    2. It's impossible to pick up pistols from your own team. I'll mash the Z button - "GIVE ME THE LUGER" but to no avail. Of course, if I have a Tokarev already, then I can switch them out, but the P38 and Luger just don't want to be picked up by themselves...

Plus, some of the maps are too big for my monitor or something, since I can get shot by people with rifles even though they'll be like 3 pixels tall. Very annoying, since aiming with bullet drop over that distance is nigh impossible for me <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> , especially since you need to raise your rifle, effectively blocking the target you're shooting at.
  • TychoCelchuuuTychoCelchuuu Anememone Join Date: 2002-03-23 Member: 345Members
Yeah picking up weapons can be a PAIN when all the gear drops in one neat little pile. Pistols really aren't worth it because if you ever need one it just means you're running around with a gun that ought not to be run around with.

low just read the post on the top of this page... meh yeh...

    read on-->

Soldier of Fortune 1 on 1 deathmatch!

I was playing against a friend a long time ago in this game. And it was possible to shoot the weapons out of your hands as wel in that game. So here I am with a lot of "hurt you good" weapons (got the mental picture?) Then I proceed to go after me buddy who seems to only have a standart weapons (I got them all). I come in guns blazing, or at least I thought... I whip out me rifle *plop* gone and flies towards me buddy... So I think WTH shotgun *plop* goes of towards him as well... the same things happens to him and I end up getting his weapons, but yeah, since he started off with less I end up running with him on my tail-->

We had a lot of laughs when we both get killed by a bomb setup by his brother who had joined the game while we were trowing guns at each other...

    Anyways, Red Orchestra doesn't tickle my ww2 bone, that's what CoH, COD and FH (FH2 in the future) are for <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
