Vista, and video modes.

<div class="IPBDescription">Teh font, colors, corruptedeted!onene!11</div>Okay, so I'm running a Vista boot right now to test this bad boy out, and as of right now I've found it ery much to my liking and may want to get/keep it.

Anyway, I haven't gotten much installed yet except for FEAR (which actually runs faster on here then Win2k, strange) and NS.

I currently have ATI's Vista drivers installed, video card is an X850XT, DirectX version is 10, and finally running a dual core AMD X2 3800+.

So my problem is this, in the Video tab, and under Video Mode, there is Software, OpenGL, and Direct3D, okay simple enough, however, Software is not supported by NS, OpenGL plain out doesn't work (NS crashes), and Direct3D runs it fine but the screen gets corrupted/screwed up and when I mean screen I mean fonts, color, and anything that is in text. I am trying to run the game at 1280X1024, 32 bit color mode, full gamma, and brightness, blah blah blah. Everything maxed essentially, this also happens in Half_Life, is there anything I can do? Or is it simply a driver issue and that HL and NS are getting fairly old now?

And yes I have tried many different settings with game and with the computer's display. All don't work so far.

Thanks for the help. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Also forgot to add that whenever I start or join a game in any of the modes, I get a "Display mode not supported by downloadable gam (I assumethe last part means game)"

That's actually "Gamma" truncated, not game.

NS ONLY works with OpenGL. Looks like you've gotta get that working before you can play NS.

Okay, where could I start though? I have now learned by the way all of my other games run fine, and NS and HL are the only ones causing frustration. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Eh? I've run NS on D3D - which is kinda strange since for some reason it decided to work (and OpenGL didn't). Then again, my computer has been very odd sometimes when it comes to gfx, Steam and HL games/mods in general.

Vista makes it so openGL is run through the Direct3D API, at reduced performance. Essentially a way to make developers use their proprietary format. There was a big uproar about this and I believe they are including some limited support in the final release (v1.4 openGL only). Not sure if a custom wrapper will have to be made for half-life to run properly with openGL on vista, but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

Your basically stuck running it through D3D unless somebody figures out a way to get openGL working for half-life under vista.
