Drexler Towers

<div class="IPBDescription">bit of an offbeat idea.</div>Here's an idea that might be totally useless, but I'll just throw it out anyway.

What if there was a marine equal to DI? I.E. a nano-tech "grey goo" (as coined by Eric Drexler)

A marine could research and build a tower that would emit nano-devices that would turn the metal ground into a network of marine power, then self replicate to eat up more ground.

This carpet of nanites could allow for more powerful structures or perhaps armor regen or somesuch.

Just an idea.

It would look cool, but I don't think it'd make enough sense. Most every map is already the Frontiernmen's territory and structures. I don't see why they'd be consuming/capturing their own territory in that way. Plus nano technology used in such a way may be of a sci-fi too different from NS's.

In Ns, we sorta already have something like that, except it isn't visible to the marines. You can only build turrets within a certain range from turret factories, or the fact that you can't drop complex items like weapons anywhere you want, only ammo and health. According to the NS Manual, there already is a nano infestation, except it doesn't work well because its trying to fight the bacterial infestation. That's why the commander can't see all over the map, or that he can't spawn HAs wherever he wants.

It would be too similar to the alien side with their hives and everything. I think we should keep the marine side how it is, they don't need the automatic regeneration if they are near a nano grid. I had an idea before about a certain special weapon that would essentially spray concentrated nano machines or something, that would have different effects depending on the target it was sprayed on. It would be like a welder / dissolver (for alien infestation) or something. You can use it to heal armor or health on a limited scale, or use it to combat the bacterial infestation, or repair / restore map functions.

I see the weapon as a support weapon that would spray nano machines and essentially have a wide variety of functions, but no specific "super power."

What would be cool would be a subtle nano-sparkle in the air in areas that are well and truly marine-held. Possibly a haze in the area between alien and marine territories to show the nano-gridlock battle going on in a macroscopic sense.

Agreed. It would look cool, but the environment is by default marine-friendly. Maybe if it was an attack on an alien facility this would make sense. At the same time I suspect bacteria that travels around space doesn't have facilities <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
