I may have confused him a little when I wrote him. I meant that all the winners would recieve the Forum Title as well as have the Dev Team take a good eye-over the map as a whole for consideration into the 'official' map releases. If we have 5 Winners, then all 5 should recieve the '2007 Map Contest Winner' Forum Titles (Or 'Map Contest Winner')
As far as I know, anyone can still submit their maps to the Dev Team at any time for consideration, this was an effort to have them look at it, even though there are several designers involved.
Let me iterate that <b><u>this is not an individual map contest</u></b> , but a room-by-room contest. Each Phase of the competition will be used as a piece to construct ONE map, using the rooms submitted. The Winner of each phase, gets their room included into the final finished product.
Mapper A, won Phase 1 - Marine Start Mapper B, won Phase 2 - Hive 1 Mapper C, won Phase 3 and 4 - etc...
The final completed map will have the MS from Mapper A, A Hive from mapper B, and both rooms from Mapper C.
Each mapper working on a Phase, is ONLY working on that defined piece/phase of the map. However, if you would like to continue to work on you map as a whole (even though you lost a phase), go for it. The Winning Pieces will all be compiled together in one Functioning map, which will be then sent to the Dev Team.
This is a community project contest, not a Mapping contest for an entire map. Although one mapper could conceivably win all phases (hard to believe).

Maybe, Maybe not. Depending on the quality of work and the phase progression. If we complete enough phases for a NS map, that will work just fine. However, if we dont have enough competitors to complete a NS map, but have enough phases completed to construct a Combat map; then we'll do that.
As Rendy mentioned it a Combat map would bring in more people because of the less long-winded mapping and would quite possibly be easier for you (Shentrax) to piece together and compile <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Look. If we go a few phases, and get some great work, and people stop participating, I'll have no choice to terminate the contest. Well if a ship is flying through space for hundreds of years, they would need to grow their own food right, especially considering they could house many thousands of staff, there would be the odd tractor working the agricultural fields, surely? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
that's true. it would be far easier to make a combat map. on the other hand, if we make this a combat map it will require far less mapping. it would end up being 3 sections: MS, Hive, middle sections. of course, this is all up to Shen.

I like a good challenge.
Besides, I should have enough prize money to complete a map, its just a matter of contestant willpower.
Provided the entries are based on how well they will work gameplay-wise, a decent ns_map could be made out of this. Although there could be problems with texture set clashes and reaching the limit with only half a map.
I do think some decent designs could come out of the Hive and MS sections with people paying their full attention to how it will affect the game. Somebody said that the official maps are a good point of reference. This is true, but I'd say they offer both good and bad examples. As sexy as it is in style, Ayumi has a terrible set of Hive rooms that mostly disadvantage Aliens. Pressure and AE35 Hives both have res nodes at the far end of corridors, <i>outside</i> the actual Hive room. At the same time their design, especially Pressure, makes sieging quite hard. Hence there are good points and bad points to be taken from most official maps.
<!--quoteo(post=1588453:date=Dec 14 2006, 12:32 PM:name=Crispy)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Crispy @ Dec 14 2006, 12:32 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--> Pressure and AE35 Hives both have res nodes at the far end of corridors, <i>outside</i> the actual Hive room. <!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Actualy, ae35's res node is inside the hive room. You're thinking of the other hive (who's name eludes me at this time)
Good point (but the RT in Hamasaki isn't too vulnerable imo). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
But AE35 is still horrible because it has long, low, straight corridors leading out of it that make it perfect for spawn camping. Same with Pressure that has <i>one</i> (hello?) main exit and two vents, so Onoses and bile-bombing Gorges are forced down one path straight into Marine gunfire.

Maybe, Maybe not. Depending on the quality of work and the phase progression. If we complete enough phases for a NS map, that will work just fine. However, if we dont have enough competitors to complete a NS map, but have enough phases completed to construct a Combat map; then we'll do that.
Are there any people already building stuff, or are you lot still trying to figure out the rules and stuff?
As Rendy mentioned it a Combat map would bring in more people because of the less long-winded mapping and would quite possibly be easier for you (Shentrax) to piece together and compile <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

Dont worry about me. Until otherwise, we're making a NS map. The Contest will still award winners based on the guidlines stated in the first post. MS, needs a resource node, therefore, it'll be a NS Map.

But combat is "teh" evil <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

Nope. The Contest rules are still in place.
Look. If we go a few phases, and get some great work, and people stop participating, I'll have no choice to terminate the contest. The objective is to put our heads together, get the community involved for some good'ol'fashon mapping, and to see if we can design a official-worthy map in the process.
Lets focus on Phase 1.
My MS is looking quite big at the moment but the tractor is coming along with a few million problems of it's own...

Hmm... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":0" border="0" alt="wow.gif" />
that's true. it would be far easier to make a combat map. on the other hand, if we make this a combat map it will require far less mapping. it would end up being 3 sections: MS, Hive, middle sections. of course, this is all up to Shen.

I like a good challenge.
Besides, I should have enough prize money to complete a map, its just a matter of contestant willpower.

Actualy, ae35's res node is inside the hive room. You're thinking of the other hive (who's name eludes me at this time)
But AE35 is still horrible because it has long, low, straight corridors leading out of it that make it perfect for spawn camping. Same with Pressure that has <i>one</i> (hello?) main exit and two vents, so Onoses and bile-bombing Gorges are forced down one path straight into Marine gunfire.
I'm in, totally in <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> thanks for making me aware of this project... I would've missed it!
I'll give up now shall I? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I wonder....
Even though i would suppose most of you may do most of your work during the next couple weeks (school break) It would be nice to see some teaser screens...
Even for the birthday boy?
