I remember watching the movies as a kid, it's more like power rangers than transformers.
The way that voltron configures anyway, that's about as far as the comparison goes (thank you very much).

Robot Chicken = win!
"In other news tonight, Voltron got totally served."
Voltron is famous for being the first and only "giant combining robot" series where the villians were actually smart enough to realise:
1. Voltron was much weaker as it's component parts, the lions.
2. They would get their ###### kicked unless they first manage to seperate voltron.
This means there were quite a few episodes where the villians almost won because they were smart enough to disable a member of the voltron team BEFORE attacking. This is one of the few series where the heroes were actually stupider then the villians and problally only won because the writers wanted them to - as for a team they tended to do a lot of "I'm going to run off alone so that voltron can't be combined!" stuff.

I remember that the only reason I watched that was because it was 3-D. (Well, atleast the 3D one was 3D. Not sure if there was an animated one).
